USA Trip, Daily Budget Help

Hi everyone,

I'm currently planning a three week trip to the USA for my family, (2 Adults & 2 Children -aged 15 & 9)from Melbourne to USA starting In LA, then onto Anaheim, Las Vegas, San Francisco, then back to LA,

Just wondering how much money we should allow daily for food, incidentals etc which is to incorporate, some bought lunches and dinners, as well as some groceries in some parts. I have already paid in full for all accomodation, main attractions etc Universal Studios, Disneyland, Alcatraz etc

Has anyone been on a similar trip recently and taken note of these expenses in a basic form?

Thanks everyone!

Kind regards.

Dee

Gas 4 dollars a gallon

Food -- 50 to 100 per person per day. It all depends on the type of restaurants you eat at and number of meals snacks etc. Kids are hungry more often

groceries - don't know 20 - 30 bucks for snacks ? That is so hard to guess

You will find San Francisco to be your most expensive. High land values and a repressive local government keep restaurant price high. Anaheim around Disneyland is geared for families so restaurant eating can be quite reasonable. LA... depending on where you are, the is a huge variety at all price ranges. Vegas can be your best food bargain. Buffets are the way to go. Hit places like Circus Circus and some of the off the strip places for excellent values. Look for hotel deals that include a buffet. Breakfast is the best deal. Force the kids to eat a lot and you can probably get by without giving them much the rest of the day.

Budget for food depends on what type of places you eat at. Also bear in mind that most of the profit is in the drinks and the desserts.

There are some quite inexpensive and healthy options. Main courses could range from $10 to $20 at the mid to low end, plus 25 to 30% to the posted menu price for tax and tip.

There is a reason people eat at the chain restaurants, price.

You can save $4 to $5 per person per meal by ordering tap water rather than a soda or other beverage. You usually have to ask for it, ie "just water".

$50 - $100 per day per person is a good ballpark amount. If you eat in fast food restaurants, you can get by for less than $10 per person per meal, especially if you stick with water and don't order drinks. More in basic sit-down restaurants (for this I'd figure $20-25 per person per meal) or fancier sit-down restaurants (perhaps $50 per person per meal). Feeding people with groceries likely would be less than $10 per person per meal, but that also depends of course on what sort of food you get. Also, agree, Vegas is where you can conceivably save money on food if you eat at the buffets - some buffets are still quite expensive but sometimes you can get some free trips to your hotel's buffet bundled in with your room.

Hi,

We are going to the same places as you in November. We have allowed $7K for our spending money. Im hoping thats enough, lol. There are 3 of us, 2 adults and one child that will no doubt send me broke as I enter disneyland.

Omg $50-$100 per person per day!!! We usually spend around $60 per day for the two of us and we get heaps of nice meals and that's an expensive day. You will find things like food, sunscreen and other incidentals much much cheaper in the USA than here in Australia and with the dollar high you will feel a lot richer than you do at home :)

Misguided $7k really!!! We spent less than that for our whole 3 week trip.

Misguided..you are right about Disneyland. It is the largest shopping mall in southern California. It also has some rides to go on.

Deez, you haven't said when you are travelling.

We leave on Sunday and doing much the same as you but adding to San Diego and Grand Canyon and we are older, no kids.

If you are not just about to leave sign up to Groupon, Social Living and Travelzoo, also resturants.com. We have prebought a few meal deals over there at 50-70% off, the first 3 we have used here in Brisbane and had no problems. It certainly saves money. You can go to each of your destinations after you log into these sites, but be warned they do flood your email.

Have a great trip
