How to spend an afternoon in LA

Hi all,

We are looking forward to travelling to the USA in September. We fly into LAX airport mid morning and are staying in a hotel near the airport as we fly out to New York early the next morning. Would love any suggestions how to spend the remainder of the day (two families with children ranging from 9 to 18).Not sure how jet lagged we will feel after flying from Australia. Someone has suggested Venice Beach. On the way home we have a night in Santa Monica so would leave that area until then. Is it too far and busy to head into the city?

Many thanks

Manhattan Beach is a great beach that's a little closer to LAX than Venice is, and Venice is easily accessible from Santa Monica so if you are going to be spending time in Santa Monica on another part of your vacation, I'd suggest Manhattan Beach first. You can get to Manhattan Beach from most of the LAX airport hotels with a short taxi ride or using the Ocean Express Trolley.

Otherwise, public transit from the LAX area hotels can be a bit difficult to the rest of the city. Renting a car for the day would be better if you want to try and go anywhere else - depending on what your group is interested in, with a car you could easily go somewhere like The Getty Center museum, Hollywood, or The Farmer's Market / Grove shopping center complex, or many other places.

If you are staying at one of the LAX Hotels on Century Blvd. you can take the Ocean Express Shuttle for $5 round trip per person a few miles south to MB. You purchase your tickets from the hotel front desk. The red shuttle bus leaves every half hour from in front of some of the hotels and drops you off near the Manhattan Beach Pier. It continues on to the MB Village shopping mall for a quick pick up, to El Segundo Plaza and back to the hotels.

If you were staying at one of the airport hotels in El Segundo, the red shuttle does not stop, but some of the hotel shuttles in ES will drop you off in MB if you ask them.

There are some wonderful shops and restaurants in Manhattan Beach, the last shuttle leaves around 10 PM.

There is a new extension of the HoHo that connects the airport area to Marina del Rey, Venice, and Santa Monica.

It should be no difficulty for you to get to those beach communities, too.

If you do not rent a car for the day, your best choices are the beach communities north or south of LAX. If you're going to be in Santa Monica on your way back from NY, consider the beach cities south of LAX. Staying at a hotel along Century Blvd by LAX is convenient, but completely lacking in accessibility to shoppin, sightseeing, etc. Hotels there are big corporate and without any character. Consider staying in El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach or even as far south as Palos Verdes. These beach cities are more interesting and will allow your group to check out some local sights.
