Where to stay if we dont plan to drive??

Hello

We are in LA for exactly 2 full days and one half day .We are a family of 4 with 2 kids age 4 and 9. We are coming by train from Anaheim on Wed 20th Nov and will depart for San Diego on Sat 23rd Nov by AMTRAK. This is our first trip to USA.We wont be driving so will prefer to stay near public transport. We would want to do a guided tour to see the major highlights of LA. One full day in universal studios is also in our itinerary. Please recommend a decent hotel which is not too far from the Union train station. We would prefer a starwood property as we can use our points so the choice is between Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel or Sheraton Universal Hotel.

Thanks :):)

Stay downtown. You can use the Expo Line to get to the the Science Center and Natural History Museum. Both are excellent for kids. Expo Park Rose Garden is very pretty, too.

You can get downtown via the LAX Flyaway shuttle to Union Station. From there a short taxi ride to your hotel. Take a look at Little Tokyo, which is downtown and has some nice hotels. What is your budget?

I don't think Universal Studios is age appropriate for your kids. It is targeted at teenagers.

The main areas to stay are Hollywood or Downtown LA, both have good public transportation.

Maybe check out the Magic Castle Hotel, an independent, but should be a good deal.

Or maybe the Loews Hollywood, both near the corner of Hollywood and Highland, lots to see and do here, here is a nice discounted bundle of attraction in the area.

But then if you want a Sheraton, the Sheraton Universal is on the LA Metro Red Line (Universal City station), so doable, but a walk up the hill to get to the Hotel from the station. And then at the Hotel, you have access to Universal Studios, and Universal CityWalk Shoppertainment Mall for restaurants and other activities. Besides that, you would need to use public transit to get around. (not much within walking distance).

As for Universal, is your youngest at least 40 inches (102 cm) high? If so, there is plenty for your entire family to do at Universal Studios Hollywood, and easy trip using the LA Metro Red Line Subway.

Downtown LA or Hollywood, both have good access to public transportation, and both near great restaurants, etc. For me, Hollywood is way too touristy but if that's what you're after, you could try it. Downtown is great and less touristy.

The Red Line Metro train goes from Downtown to Hollywood and Universal Studios, should you decide to still go there.

Hotels Downtown are Omni, Sheraton Downtown, J.W. Marriott, Bonaventure, Ritz Carlton, The O Hotel.

There is a Sheraton in downtown which would be convenient for you since the red line metro rail which stops under the hotel goes to both Hollywood as well as to Union Station. I'm curious why you are visiting Anaheim, then L.A., then San Diego since you'd be heading north from Anaheim to reach L.A., then south from L.A. through Anaheim and finally onward to San Diego. It would save time if you started in L.A., went south to Anaheim and then continued south to San Diego. This would be ESPECIALLY true if you commenced your visit by landing at LAX (which is closer to L.A., of course, than it is to Anaheim).

Well, getting from LAX to the Disneyland is easy using the Disneyland Resort Express Bus, and it offers drop off service to the your Hotel, so that is fairly easy. Prime Time and Super Shuttle are basically the same price from LAX to either the Disneyland area or the Hollywood/Downtown LA area. So I don't see a big deal there.

IMHO, the pricing of accommodations on specific dates, and specific activities, such as seeing specific shows at Disneyland (weekends are usually better) would be more important than which order you did it in. You still have the same amount of transfers.

I would opt for the Sheraton Universal if it's available. It would be a better environment for the kids and it'll make it easy for you to spend the entire day at Universal Studios and CityWalk. You can always take a tour to see the rest of LA before going to your next destination.

Thanks for all your replies.

We have not yet finalized our itinerary. Most probably will end up staying in the downtown Sheraton as the Universal hotel might not be available on points and cash.

HSJ ...yes now we are thinking planning LA first and then Disney.. so we may be arriving on Sat 16th Nov from San Francisco by the coast starlight. Sunday will be LA sightseeing and Monday Universal studios. Then off to Anaheim by AMTRAK on Tuesday.
