Transportation from Union Station to Santa Monica Pier help

We will be staying in the Anaheim area and were planning on riding Amtrak to Union Station in the morning to visit Hollywood attractions. We would then want to go to Santa Monica Pier. Would Rapid #10 on the Big Blue Bus work for us? We are wanting to to visit the Pier for about 3 hours during a weekday and then return to Union Station. What would be the best option?

Yes, Big Blue Bus #10 bus should be the quickest bus between the two. If you need to go back after #10 stops running, then use Metro Bus 704 on Santa Monica Blvd. If its really late, a slower option would be Metro Bus 4 which uses the same route as 704 but stops a lot more often,

Yes, 10 Big Blue Bus is the best way to get to Santa Monica from Union Station. Just be careful in finding the stop at Union Station. Also, find out when the last bus returns to Union Station.

I also get the sense you are not aware of all to see and do downtown. The Grammy Museum at LA Live is likely of interest (7th & Metro). At minimum, Olvera Street and Philippe's will give you a sense of historic LA. They are across the street from Union Station.

Are you aware of the Natural History Museum and California Science Center, now home to the Space Shuttle, at Expo Park are accessible via the Expo Line from downtown? Food for thought.

Actually, just to clarify, are you planning to head to Santa Monica from Union Station, or from Hollywood? #10 won't help you if you want to leave from Hollywood - for that take Metro bus 217 or 780 from Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. or Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St., headed west (sign on bus will say Washington / Fairfax). Exit the bus at Fairfax Ave. and Santa Monica Blvd. Then take Metro bus 704 from there.

But to return to Union Station from Santa Monica, #10 is the quickest way to go if its running when you need it to be.

Thanks for all the responses. We were wanting to leave Union Station to go to the Pier. I got confused reading the Big Blue Bus website and was afraid it didn't run on weekdays. Is it clearly marked where to wait for the BBB at Union Station?

I had forgotten that CA had won the bid for a space shuttle. Thank you for the suggestions.

One more thing... Will the bus say #10 on it? Do I need to look for a certain destination name on the display up top?

Yes, the display on the front of the bus will indicate that its bus #10 (and the side of the bus will say "Big Blue Bus" on it. I don't recall specifically what the sign on the bus will say but most likely when its heading towards Santa Monica it will say "Santa Monica" on the sign, and in the other direction "Downtown LA" or "Union Station". In any case, you can always ask the driver when you board the bus to make sure its headed to where you want to go.

Just to be clear:

If you plan to return to Anaheim after visiting the Pier, I'm not sure that heading back to Union Station is the best way to do it. Instead, transfer from the Pier area to LAX via the Santa Monica #3 bus -- 34 minutes, $1 fare -- (which will drop you at the bus plaza adjacent to LAX), then follow these steps to return to Anaheim.

1. Exit the bus plaza and turn right onto the sidewalk just outside of the plaza. Walk to the corner, cross to the far corner and continue walking 30 seconds until you see the sign for Parking Lot C on your right. Enter the parking lot and get onto the next shuttle bus to LAX (no charge). The ride takes just a few minutes.

2. Get off at the first stop in front of terminal #1. (Tell the bus driver that you want terminal #1 if he asks which terminals to stop at. Otherwise, he/she might stop at all of them). When you exit the bus, you'll be standing under the RED overhead sign that says "Hotels and Parking Lot Shuttles". You'll need to walk back (in the opposite direction from the bus's direction of travel) and stand under the GREEN overhead sign that says: "Flyaway Buses and Long Distance Vans".

3. Wait there for the Disneyland Express Bus. The bus runs every 1/2 hour from 10:30 to 4:30 pm and every hour from 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Take the bus to your hotel (or, if you prefer, you can get off at the bus's first stop, the Disneyland Hotel, and walk to your hotel from there). Adult tickets are $24; children's tickets are $21. The ride, including 'waiting time' for the bus and while other passengers are being dropped off, will take between 60 and 90 minutes (depending on where your hotel is located)

Thank you all so much for the advice. We might go back to Anaheim from Santa Monica. I appreciate the alternative return you mentioned.
