Hi, I'm a UCSB student trying to get home on the weekends

Hi,

I'm a college student trying to get home (the Bay Area--Berkeley) on the weekends.

So far, options I have are Greyhound buses, Amtrak (which does not go with my schedule at all...), the ridiculously expensive flights departing from SBA, and taking a long route to LAX and to my flight departing from LAX to SFO.

Any cheap suggestions to get to LAX?

Where do the Greyhound buses stop at (for Oakland and San Jose)?

Thanks

Have you looked at this combo, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train south from Santa Barbara to Burbank, which is right next to the Bob Hope Airport and has a free shuttle.

Then a flight from BUR to either OAK or SFO.

Don't they have ride share board at UCSB?

One more thought, take the Pacific Surfliner Train all the way north to its end, San Luis Obispo, and then transfer to the Capital Corridor Train.... Details at this link.

Trying to come home just by Amtrak and then going back will take a long time if this is just a weekend trip. When you say on the weekends, I presume this is an occasional weekend.

I would check with other students who live in the Bay area on what they do and use Facebook and other campus tools to get this info -- as TSS mentions.

They do..but I don't want to get in just anybody's cars. That's just my issue.

Can you get a 'ride share'? It would be faster, more direct and cheaper than the other options.

Thank you, Darkbeer, for suggesting a lot of options. I'm looking into them now!

When my son was a student at UCSB, and coming home on holiday weekends, he would give rides to the LAX area, usually for the price of gas. Students post on dorm bulletin boards, ride share, ask around to friends. etc.

Good luck.
