You'll be able to combine both activities into a single day. Determine what you'll do on your other day -- Getty Center, Griffith Observatory, Grammy Museum, Paley Museum, Farmer's Market/The Grove? Tell us a bit more about your interests when traveling. How old are your children?

Since you have a car and a decent budget, your real challenge will be finding a place to accommodate 5 people. LA has limits on the number of guests per room. I'm sure others will have suggestions.

Are you looking to have everyone in one room? If so, see our list here of hotels that can handle 5 or 6 people in one room:

Of these, with a car, I might suggest the Best Western Sunset Plaza as its in a rather good location and not far from Hollywood or Universal.

Note - it really does not take a full day to see Hollywood - in fact it only takes a few hours and if you time things well, you can combine it with Universal Studios on the same day which is a 10 minute drive from Hollywood and generally would take about 3/4 of a day.

You can do both in one day, which will free you up to see other areas of LA like Santa Monica or Beverly Hills, or both.

O.K thanks for your suggestions. On the sightseeing day I thought we could head to Santa Monica & Venice Beach & then have a look at Hollywood, the kids just want to see the sign & the walk of fame,so would it be better to stay in Santa Monica or Hollywood??Boys are 12,9,8.

Thankyou..

If you can afford it, by all means stay in Santa Monica. There is no comparison.
