South Los Angeles - Malls close to Expostion Park

Hi!

My son may go to scienceclasses at California Science center, Exposition park, in June.

While he is there, the rest of the family would like to do some shopping. It seems like the Exposition park area is not the best place to be.

Are there any nice malls (with Jc penney, American eagle, sears) that you can reach easy and safe by car?

I'd recommend the Glendale Galleria. Here's their website: http://www.glendalegalleria.com/directory

If you take the Expo Line light rail train (which stops just outside the Science Center) a few stops to the 7th St. Mero Center, you'll be across the street from Macy's Plaza - not the most exciting mall and not too large but as the name implies it does have a Macy's and its easy to get to.

Glendale Galleria would also be a good choice, especially since not only is that mall very large, but its across the street from another very nice outdoor mall, the Americana at Brand mall - but you would need to drive to get there.

Some miss the fact that you'll have a car. I assume you want to drop off your child at the museum, head to the mall, and then drive back. Every day?

Exposition Park is close to downtown, and next to USC, and has some nice museums, but isn't in the very best of areas and not great for the type of shopping you seem to be interested in. As you'll have car, public transit not critical,. though accounting for heavy traffic at rush hours is. It would help to know what kind of shopping you're interested in.

Some examples (not exhaustive list):

Glendale Galeria: http://goo.gl/maps/WuiQL

Beverly Center: http://goo.gl/maps/Z6Tas

Citadel Center (outlet stores): http://goo.gl/maps/0b9ks

Los Angeles Fashion District (not a mall): http://goo.gl/maps/kC6LE

Westfield Culver City mall: http://goo.gl/maps/vbD6B

The mall near your hotel in Manhattan Beach is better than 7+Fig.

It might be just as easy to go back there, depending on traffic.

In Glendale there is also the Americana on Brand. Have them check the mall website directories to see whether they have the stores they want.

Culver City is close to the USC area and pretty much a shopping mecca for affordable shopping. Take a look at the Westfield Culver City Shopping Mall:

All around that area are big shopping centers, too, with TJ Maxx, Ross, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond.....

Thank all. How is the area to drive in? Crowded? Bad areas to avoid?

If you only have 2 1/2 hours from the time you drop him off to the time you pick him up I would stick with the shopping in Downtown LA. Downtown shopping isn't great, it is the one gap in DTLA's resurgence, but there are places like Macy's Plaza, 7+FIG shopping center and the Bonaventure Galleria plus the Fashion District.

I also think you could amuse yourselves at the other museum at Expo Park, the Natural History Museum, the Rose Garden and on the campus of USC, maybe go to the bookstore and buy some USC clothing.

Downtown LA = DTLA

With the building of the Staples Center (where the LA Kings, LA Lakers and LA Clippers play), LA Live and other sites, Downtown Los Angeles is experiencing a renaissance that has a lot of people moving back into Downtown, hot restaurants going in, more shopping coming and returning Downtown to a hub of life, not just commerce. 15 years ago not many people would stay in Downtown after work, they would commute home. Now many live in Downtown or stay after to eat and socialize or go to one of the NBA or NHL games.

I do think Downtown needs a major mall though, as I said, the shopping as not caught up with the rest of the progress in the area.
