LV to LA driving ...

We are driving from LV to West Hollywood in November and wondered if there was a more interesting route? Would you spend the extra time and go via Pahrump? Or are there detours along Hwy15 worth stopping for?

Thanks guys.

When leaving Vegas, take I-15 to Cima Road and cut thru the Mojave Preserve to Kelso. See the largest concentration of Joshua Trees in the world off this road.See the restored train depot/museum. Wander the Kelso dunes.

Then take Kelbaker Road to I-40 to rejoin I-15 in Barstow. This drive adds about an hour.

Another option, is to cross I-40 to Route 66 and see Roys cafe, then cut across Amboy Road to Joshua Tree National Park. Take hwy 62 to join I-10 near Palm Springs, then take I-10 into LA.

Ditto what dez sez. Have a GPS and pay attention to signs. You will be going through the middle of nowhere, but it is starkly beautiful.

Interesting is in the eye of the beholder. There are "desert people" who are endlessly fascinated by the desert landscapes and then there are others who just see it as so much empty.

Then there are "mountain people" who love the cooler temps, pines trees and Alpine lakes.

Once you get the lay of the land looking at the big map you get in the mail, I'd make extensive use of Google Maps and their "Street View" that lets you zoom in down to ground level and look all around from the ground.

I actually rather like the scenery on the 15. Like Scottca says beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If time is an issue don't be afraid of the direct route!
