Excursions and activities ideas

Hi we have ten days in the area staying five days in Anaheim and five days in north hollywood. We have two children age 4 and 10. We are looking for ideas of different things we can do.we are inclined not to do disney however we will probably visit the downtown disney section in the evening.

Some ideas we have had are Universal, knotts berry farm, Santa Monica beach area, hollywood walk of fame and bevery hills area. Any other ideas are welcome please however we are going to try and manage as best we can without a car whilst we are there using the metro and hop on /off bus and regular buses. Is there any outlet shopping malls within easy taxi/bus distance? Thanks

Generally its not suggested to stay in Anaheim except for Disney and perhaps Knott's Berry Farm. You didn't mention the exact hotel you are staying at in Anaheim but you might want to look into Metro Bus 460 for transfering to Knott's Berry Farm. I would suggest that 5 nights there is way too long if no time at Disney, especially without a car.

For Outlets, there is the Outlets at Orange mall which is not far from the Disney area. There's also the Citadel Outlets, which I believe offers a free bus to and from Union Station in downtown LA, which is the main public transit hub in LA. There are lots of ways to get good prices on clothes without specifically going to an outlet mall. To start, there are discount clothing stores in the main parts of the city - Ross Dress For Less and TJ Maxx both have several locations. Macy's Department Store (located in most malls0 will also give you 11% off on clothes and most other non-jewelry/cosmetic items in the store if you present your passport, and that discount is in addition to any discounts from any sales that they may have at the time.

Generally, North Hollywood would not be suggested either, especially without a car. Despite its name its really a separate area from Hollywood and its not very central, and getting places from there via public transit can be difficult, except maybe perhaps if you are staying in walking distance to the North Hollywood Metro Station. Even then it won't be that quick to reach a lot of places, but if you aren't in walking distance of that then you're going to be looking at some lengthy bus journeys to get places, most likely.

Without a car, generally you'd do better to stay in Hollywood itself, near the intersection of Hollywood blvd. and Highland Ave., rather than in North Hollywood. This intersection is a big public transit hub and is the main depot for the Hop-On/Hop-Off bus. Much more convenient than North Hollywood. There's a wide variety of hotels here spanning a range of prices and amenities, so in terms of hotels there's "something for everyone" here, as they say.

What are you planning to do in Anaheim? Most people do not stay in Anaheim if they are not visiting Disneyland. Why do you think you should stay in Anaheim for 5 nights?

Yes, Anaheim is attractive for the amusement parks: Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, as well as a dinner theater some find entertaining. Otherwise, it could prove to be very boring. A San Diego/Los Angeles split makes more sense, but only if you want to see the great things San Diego has to offer. If Orange County is a place you wish to visit, look at Huntington Beach or Laguna Beach, or hop on over to the Orange County forum for things to do:

Here in Los Angeles, from your N. Hollywood location (I am not familiar w/N.H'wood, so you should make sure you are staying somewhere with good mass transit or you will find it terribly hard to function without a car), check the tab at the top of this page, Things to Do. You'll find plenty of family things to do and here in LA, lots are inexpensive. I also recommend you do a web search of Griffith Park, which has a ton of fun things to do and see including the lovely LA Zoo. In addition, on the right side of this page, read Top questions and the sample itineraries for more family activities.

Happy planning!

In general, it's recommended to decide upon your itinerary FIRST, then select your hotels -- especially if you plan to rely upon public transit. You've mentioned some fine destinations; now, it's time to put some order to it and decide how many days in L.A., how many days in Orange County/Anaheim and, if you want, how many days in San Diego. Once you come up with the number of days and the attractions you'll be visiting, we can better direct you for hotels.

If your hotels are already 'locked in', please tell us what they are.

Hi thanks for all your replies all very usefup. We are staying at The Garland in hpllywood and then at Hyatt Regency OC. Its not that we definatley won't hire a car its that we would prefer not to however if its problematic then we may habe to reconsider this. Thanks all for your great suggestions

Are you saying that the hotels can't be changed?

The Garland is in North Hollywood which is a different neighborhood from Hollywood (North Hollywood is north of Hollywood and it takes some time to transfer from North Hollywood to Hollywood, the latter of which is a bustling transit center). The area around the Garland, on the other hand, is in a quiet residential neighborhood. There is a bus that pulls up across the street from the hotel that heads into Hollywood (the Metro Bus #156) which takes between 15 and 20 minutes to make the transfer but the bus runs only about once every 50 minutes during most of the day (a little more frequently during 'rush hours') so it will waste a fair amount of time staying in North Hollywood without a car, especially since you're likely to make two return trips a day (for daytime touring and nighttime dining/entertainment).

The hotel does feature a free shuttle to the Universal City red line (metro rail) station which features trains that go into Hollywood and downtown L.A. more frequently than the bus (once every 12 minutes, most of the time) but the free shuttle is not always immediately available and I believe the service is curtailed in the evenings.

So, I'd recommend either hiring a car or changing your hotel in L.A.

The Garland is not a good location without a car. I'm going to assume you are from Australia and a travel agent placed you there? It's a common practice - can you change hotels?

Anaheim is an even worse location without a car, and especially if not visiting Disneyland.

You cannot imagine how many folks from Australia and the UK have had hotels suggested to them by travel agents who have NEVER been to California and who don't know the area at all! Many of the hotels are just wrong for a variety of reasons such as the ones described above!!! Please listen to the locals who know the area best! IF you can change hotels please do it before you arrive!!
