Cali Road Trip in Aug/Sept 2014

Hi, I wanted to know which route is better to do on Highway 1: LA to SF or SF to LA? Should we consider going to San Diego? We are planning of being in California from Aug 22 to Sept 6 (15 nights).

It will be a girls vacation getaway (2 - 40 year olds). Right now, we are thinking of:

-3 nights in SF

-2 nights in Napa/Sonoma

-3 nights in LA

- 1 night Yosemite

Can you recommend other places to visit and how long we should stay in each city/town? Hotel recommendations, itinerary? We definitely interested in stopping at beaches along the way.

Hi Jersey Girls

I would add an extra night to Yosemite, a few nights in Monterey, a night in Cambria or Pismo Beach and maybe San Diego.

Here's a possible itinerary:

SF: 3 nights

Napa: 2 nights

Yosemite: 2 nights

Monterey: 2 nights

Cambria or Pismo Beach: 1 night

LA: 3 nights

San Diego: 2 nights

IF you left San Diego out, you could add those days/nights to Santa Barbara or Anaheim for visiting Disneyland, if that interests you.

Between Monterey and Cambria is the wild, remote and highly scenic Big Sur coast. It's a slow, twisty drive that sits high above the Pacific Ocean with amazing views. It is not a drive that can or should be rushed. Once you have an idea of what you want to see/do after perusing the California Forums page of Top Questions to the right of the topic section, we can help you firm up your itinerary.

September is convention season in SF, so you'll want to check your dates to the SF convention calendar to make sure you won't be impacted by the inevitable high lodging rates.

Let us know what your lodging budget is and the type of lodging you prefer: Upscale, middle of the road, budget or B&B.

Have fun with your planning

What is your nightly lodging budget and style when traveling? Also interests? There is a wide range of lodging here from budget motels to nice resorts to wonderful bed and breakfasts, etc.

Also while its a girls trip that can mean spas and shopping and nice little cafes

to all out adventure trip with hiking, bike riding, beach combing, surf lessons, and so forth.

If you plan to fly into one city and then fly home from the other, check the rates on the one-way rental cars, sometimes they are have has much renting north to south as south to north. Just something to consider.

I might suggest you ask this question on the California forum. When you go there, please look at the right side of the page, top questions, for help with general questions.

Happy planning.
