Day Tours from LAX Airport

Hi, I will be transiting in LAX airport in May, and have a 9-hour waiting time before boarding my next flight. Landing at 1.30pm, and departing at 11.15pm.

Can you recommend any half-day tours that I can sign up for to see Los Angeles? I prefer not to self-drive.

Thank you.

Most 'afternoon' (half day) tours begin between noon and 1 pm and depart from hotels that are adjacent to LAX. As you won't be landing until 1:30, you won't be able to take one of these tours. You can arrange for a customized 'private tour' through one of the large tour companies or one of the 'shuttle services' but that will cost you a lot more than a standard 'group tour'. If you're interested in this, contact one of the following:

1. Look at tour #20 (custom tour) at the bottom of the page:

2. Zippyshuttle.net

Send an email to inquire

Another option is to transfer to a stop for the Hop On, Hop Off (HoHo) tour and join that tour. It runs only until 6 or 7 pm (depending on the season). Here's a description of the tour which involves several intersecting loops of motor coaches (buses):

starlinetours.com/los-angeles-tour-HOHO.asp

(The HoHo stop closest to the airport would be at the Radisson Hotel -- stop #97 -- across the street from LAX's main entrance). Keep in mind that this tour moves relatively slowly (compared to driving or using public transit) so, depending on the specific sites you'd like to see, it might make more sense to take a taxi to a stop further from the airport and start the tour there.

No matter which tour option you select, be sure that you will have a place for your luggage. Your onward carrier must be prepared to take your luggage after you've arrived at LAX. If not, none of the above tour companies will do so (although Zippy Shuttle will allow you to take your along with you).

There are NO STORAGE LOCKERS at LAX for luggage although there is an 'off site' storage company but that will involve some expense and time spent waiting for the truck to pick up and eventually drop off your luggage.

The last option is to hire a car and, if need be, take your luggage with you.

It helps if you can be as specific as possible. Tell us more. Are your flights domestic or international? What day of the week? Is it just you alone? What specific neighborhoods are you interested in seeing (L.A. is enormous).

Or, you can transfer by taxi to the city of Santa Monica and join Starline's afternoon tour of Santa Monica and the Getty Villa: starlinetours.com/santa-monica-tour-S1H.asp

The Hop-On/Hop-Off tour is probably your best bet, since you can join that tour at any time. The most interesting loops of this tour are the Yellow, Red and Purple loops. Although some of the other tour loops go to the airport hotels, if you join the tour there you're looking at a lengthy round trip, so as HopSkipJump mentions, it makes more sense to take a taxi etc. to one of the other tour stops closer to the parts of the tour that you want to see.
