5 days in LA, on honeymoon, how to fit everything in?

Hi,

We are travelling to LA as part of our trip and are planning to be there from 1st August to 6th August 2014.

We will be travelling from San Francisco down the coast over about a week and will arrive on the Friday night. We are going to stay with family for 3 nights in Thousand Oaks, and the last 2 nights at Anaheim for Disney.

Can anyone give me ideas for how to do things in what order to fit everything in?!

We want to do touristy things!

Observatory

House of blues gospel brunch

warner bros studio tour

Walk of fame

Mullholland drive

Hollywood sign

The grove

Santa Monica beach

Venice beach

Malibu

Disney

And anything else we can fit in!

Any help would be great

Thanks!

There's no beating staying for free with family, but unfortunately Thousand Oaks is not a very central location for tourist attractions in general, or those that you specifically mentioned, but with a car its do-able.

In general, from Thousand Oaks, I would do Malibu, Santa Monica and Venice one day. Take one of the canyon roads south from Thousand Oaks to Highway 1 - Kanan Dune Road or Decker Canyon Road. Then take Highway 1 through Malibu and on to Santa Monica. You can park in Santa Monica and walk along the beach to Venice (30-45 minutes each way), or rent bikes and use the bike path on the beach to reach Venice, or you can of course use your car to reach Venice as well. You can either reverse the route to return to Thousand Oaks, or take the 405 freeway north to the 101 and return to Thousand Oaks that way.

Most of the other activities you mentioned are clustered relatively close together, but may be too much to do all of them in one day. Generally, I would book an early morning tour at Warner Bros. - if its a weekday be prepared for a lot of traffic on the 101 freeway from Thousand Oaks. After WB you can do a little bit of Mulholland Drive (note - the main drivable part of Mulholland is from just west of the 101 freeway in Hollywood to a little bit west of the 405 in Brentwood, even though on maps it looks like it goes longer than that, there are stretches west of the 405 that are unpaved and or closed to cars). After Mulholland, go to Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. in Hollywood for an hour or two - it won't take much longer than that - there you will see the famous Chinese Theater, the Walk of Fame, and you'll be able to see the Hollywood sign from there. The Grove is not far from Hollywood so you may be able to squeeze that in. Finish the day at the Griffith Observatory (note is closed on Mondays) - try to get there a little bit before sunset if you can so that you can take in the great views there which are great both during the day and at night as well, and then stay into the evening when the Observatory itself is at its best.

Since you have three days in Thousand Oaks, you may want to split the above day into two, or do something else the 3rd day.

For House of Blues Gospel brunch, they only have them on certain Sundays. Check their web site. They have two LA area locations - West Hollywood (which they refer to as Los Angeles on their web site) and Anaheim at Downtown Disney. Its unclear if they would be doing the Gospel Brunch on the Sunday you are here (tried to figure it out on their web site but could not) but if they are, it looks like you would be in Thousand Oaks still that day so the West Hollywood location would probably work best that day.

Just know that Thousand Oaks is an hour from everything on your list, maybe longer in traffic, as is Anaheim.

Thanks do much for your replies.

That's great ideas you've given for us to do. Love the observatory at subset idea!

Will try to spread that over the three days then, one day at the beach and spread all the central bits over 2 days.

Any tips for places to eat and bars for us to go?

Was thinking if taking the family out for dinner to say thanks (2 adults, 1 18 year old) somewhere more upmarket?

Someone has mentioned the roof on Wilshire for an evening. Any thoughts?

We are both 27 so want to have dinner and drinks but have to get back to Thousand Oaks!

Thanks again!

Compared to the overall cost of your holiday, a hotel room in L.A. for 2 or 3 nights will be a small amount to pay and will give you SO MUCH MORE flexibility to enjoy your honeymoon. It's your honeymoon! If cost is a factor, stay in a CENTRAL PART of Los Angeles, forfeit the car (and the cost of the petrol and parking fees) and use public transit to get around ($5 per day for a DAY PASS allowing unlimited travel).

I can't imagine driving back and forth from Thousand Oaks every day.

We have looked at hotels in central LA and in Santa Monica, cost wasn't the issue it would just be nice to see family whilst we are there too.

We are in California for 3 weeks in total so have plenty on time on our own!

We will have a car and they have said they will drive us to anywhere if we didn't want to take the car.

Thanks though!
