What can we do in half a day in LA

Myself, husband & 16 year old son arrive in LA from Las Vegas at 10.55am and fly out again at 22.30 same day (this is in July 2014), are there any tours that would pick us up from the airport and take us out for a half day tour? Was thinking of maybe heading to the beach. We would have had 4 days in LA on our flight over so would have been to Universal Studio and Disneyland.

Forget about a tour. If you've only seen Disneyland and Universal Studios, you haven't seen LA. Head to the Getty Center. Have lunch there on the patio overlooking the city. Later, head to Santa Monica to while away the rest of the day. After a fine meal in SM, head to LAX. Yes, rent a car.

Are your bags going to be checked through to your next flight/ same airline? If not, you'll have to rent a car, haul them into the boot and head to Manhattan Beach or Santa Monica.

Yes bags will have been checked in. Best way to get to Manhattan Beach & Santa Monica, taxi, bus or rent car?

Taxi rides to either would be quickest and not too expensive, either. Santa Monica is 7 miles from LAX, Manhattan beach is 3 miles away.

The casual town of Manhattan Beach is a few miles south of LAX. Have the cab driver take you down Sepulveda Blvd. to Manhattan Beach Blvd, then a mile down to the pier.

There are lots of shops and restaurants for you to have lunch. A beautiful pier to walk out on, watch the surfers and volleyball players that are there all times of day. Restrooms and showers at base of Pier. The Strand, a cement walkway along the beach is full of locals out taking walks, jogging. You could rent bikes from Fun Bunns near the pier, and ride any portion of the 22 mile bike path.

A cab will take 10 to 12 minutes from LAX, but if you rent a car for the day, you would have more freedom to do what you want until evening. There is a cab stand near the base of the pier at Shellback's Tavern to return to the airport.

Something for everyone in MB:

Places for lunch are the Kettle, owned by same family is Simmzy's a few doors down and many more like the tiny Ocean View Cafe a couple blocks over.
