cab rates and Santa Monica beach

I finally booked the hotel - Holeywood Celebrity Hotel (1775 Orchid Ave, Hollywood) for June 2-5. Would like to go to Santa Monica Pier on the afternoon 6/2, to Griffith Observatory on 6/4 and to Getty Center on 6/5. Would like to know how much approximately might it cost by cab from my hotel to each of those 3 places?

Also can we swim in Santa Monica or is not the type of beach for swimming (like SF)?

Any mapping program (like maps.google.com) will tell you the distance between these points. Use $3 per mile as an approximation of the fare. If you travel during 'rush hours', add 'wait time' ($10-$20) for the time when the taxi is stuck in traffic.

Santa Monica is a swimming beach.

it is hard to figure out what is the usual traffic at those routes of LA, and $20 makes a big difference

To Santa Monica pier - about $45-50 each way if they use the freeway, perhaps $40-45 if they take surface streets which is a slightly shorter distance.

To Getty Center - about $35 each way

To Griffith Observatory - about $20 each way

You might also try Uber or Lyft - smart phone apps that let you arrange private rides and may come out a little less money than a taxi, if you will have your smart phone with you and it will have a data connection.

Note also you can reach Santa Monica beach and the Getty Center with two bus rides each if you want to save money vs. taxis. Griffith you would have to use a taxi since there is only bus service to Griffith on Saturdays and Sundays.

You can certainly swim at Santa Monica Beach. Be aware even in early June the water will not be all that warm, most likely.

A cab will cost more round trip to Santa Monica and to the Getty, than one night's stay at your hotel. One thing people don't realize when they book hotels here are the vast distances to the sights -- you really should rent a car!

google maps, etc will estimate the duration of the trip based upon the time of day. So, if you request the route at the same time of day that you plan to make the drive, it will show you the 'regular' drive-time and the 'current' drive-time. The difference in these times, let's call it 20 minutes, will be $10 in additional fare since 'waiting time' (when the taxi is stuck in traffic or stopped at a red light) is calculated at 50-cents/minute.

Don't forget to add tip (15%)

Here is a taxi fare calculator. There are a few out on the web.

www.taxifarefinder.com/main.php?city=LA

Uber is another option. Renting a car makes much more sense.

Let us know how the cab thing goes.

Thank you to everyone for a the responces and links, thus is very helpful. Will try to figure out how long wil it take by bus vs cab to see if it would not be too long/too hard to get to Santa Monica and to Getty center by bus.
