Best Western Sunset Plaza to Union st station

Hi What is the best way of getting to the train station from this hotel?

Travelling to San Diego on the surfliner!

Is it easy enough to find the platform etc!! Once at the station?

Thankyou

Take a taxi or use Uber. Don't make the trip during rush hour.

Conversely, you could take the cab to Hollywood & Highland. From there, the Redline goes directly to Union Station.

Union Station is easy to navigate. Essentially, there is a large terminal building which connects to a tunnel. From the tunnel, you walk up to the train platform. If you take the subway, you have to walk up to the station. Make sure you exit towards Union Station and not the transit plaza, which is a platform for city buses. Otherwise, you'll have to double back through the tunnel to get to Union Station.

You can use one of these taxi fare calculators of which there are many. It estimates about $40-$45 with tip and taking about 20 minutes. It would be about $15 to Hollywood & Highland subway station.

If you're without a car, I'd have assumed you'd already taken the subway to downtown. If you haven't, definitely consider it before your final day. Downtown is the most vibrant place in the city right now.

If you're relying on public transit, your hotel isn't the best location. It is a really nice area. But, connections to public transit are okay at best. It is also in the hills above West Hollywood. So walking anywhere will quickly involve walking down hill, which means walking back up. Frankly, I'd change your hotel.

I'd suggest staying in downtown because you'll be at the center of the public transit system. Or consider staying at the beach. Santa Monica would be perfect for you little guy. What is your budget? If you're staying in West Hollywood, you can probably afford Santa Monica. Hotel California is a great place for families. Another alternative is the area near the Farmer's Market. This is a family friendly area and better for bus connections. I really like the Farmer's Daughter Hotel because is it right across the street.

When are you visiting?

Your son would likely enjoy the Natural History Museum and California Science Center. You will, too. The Getty is a surprisingly good place for families. Lunch on the patio is wonderful. But, without a car, not sure if it is worth the time.

This might be too late for you but, without a car, I'd recommend staying somewhere other than the Sunset Strip (since the public transit there isn't that great -- only one bus, the #2). I live in West Hollywood and I wouldn't recommend it without a car.

Ideally, the location of your hotel should be based upon your itinerary. It looks as if you haven't decided upon an itinerary as yet. Is your hotel already booked? Can you cancel it?

The Hop On, Hop Off (HoHo) tour is a decent option but be aware that Los Angeles (and its neighbors, e.g. Santa Monica) constitute an immense area. Bottom line, it takes a long time to make your way around Los Angeles on the HoHo especially if you haven't planned ahead.

Here are some tips:

a. Plan ahead. Make a list of the sites you plan to visit and the path you need to follow to reach them. The HoHo has something like 7 different (color-coded) routes. You'll need to transfer from one to the next (and, in some cases, to the next one after that) to reach certain destinations.

b. The HoHo begins running at 9:00 (at certain points in the route. The HoHo bus at the stop nearest your hotel -- no matter where it is -- might not first appear until 9:15 or 9:30. The tour ends at 6:00 or 7:00 pm but some of the routes shut down earlier. So, if you plan to spend the evening, in, say, Santa Monica, you'll need to return to your hotel by other means.

c. Similarly, it might benefit you to use public transit to make your way to a distant neighborhood (from your hotel) before the HoHo starts so that you get a headstart on the day. For example, you might want to use public transit to transfer to downtown L.A. (departing from your hotel at 8:00 and arriving at, say, Union (rail) station at 8:50 so that you can join the downtown loop of the HoHo at 9:00 (the stop is across the street from the station).

d. Each time you get off of a HoHo to explore, you'll have to resume the tour on a future bus. The buses arrive every 20 or 30 minutes (depending on the season). It's unlikely that you will have seen the attraction you're visiting in just 20 minutes since that would have to include walking between the bus stop and the attraction so that means, that each stop you make will be a stop of 40 to 60 minutes. Add to that, when you transfer from one colored tour loop to another, there is a layover period.

Bottom line, the HoHo is convenient since you don't have to fuss with maps or GPS but it's not the fastest way to get around our metro area. In addition to using public transit before the tour begins and after it ends, each day, it's also advisable to use it during the day (if your itinerary calls for it) to hurry you along to your next attractions.

For example, if you started the HoHo at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood and planned to ride through the Sunset Strip (in neighboring West Hollywood) and then head to the beach (Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade and Pier and then onward to Venice), the HoHo schedule would look like this:

a. Start the tour at the Chinese Theater at 9:00

b. Ride through the Sunset Strip (the bus would stop a number of times but you wouldn't get off). After the Sunset Strip, the bus comes to stop #6 ("Santa Monica Bl / Pacific Design Center") at 9:20. The schedule, below is for a weekday.

You now have 2 choices: Stay on the HoHo to Santa Monica or use public transit. Let's look at these:

a. By public transit:

i. Walk back one block (east) on Santa Monica Bl to the NW corner of Santa Monica Bl & San Vicente Bl (1 minute).

ii. At 9:36, take the 704 rapid (express) bus westbound to the corner of Santa Monica Bl & 2nd St). This is stop is one block west of the Third Street Promenade and one block east of the bluffs overlooking the ocean. The fare is $1.50 and the ride takes 52 minutes so you arrive at 10:28 a.m.

b. If you stayed on the HoHo, here's what would happen...

i. Ride it one more stop (to stop #7 at 9333 3rd St in Beverly Hills). Arrive there at 9:40)

ii. There's a 20 minute layover at stop #7 where you'd transfer to the yellow route at 10:00.

iii. The HoHo doesn't stop at the corner of Santa Monica Bl & 2nd St but it does stop close by at Wilshire Bl @ 3rd St Promenade (stop #59 at 11:00) -- close by.

So, public transit would make it to the Third Street Promenade 32 minutes faster than staying on the HoHo Tour.

Happy Planning!

Wow!! Great info. Unfortunately it is too late to cancel hotel!

Was recommended by UK agent as we are only staying 3 days then down to San Diego!

HoHo it is then! Probably do beach areas one day and worry about the rest!

Thanks for your help! Do any tour companies do a fast but all round excursion as such?
