Is Hwy 1 route similar to coast in Mendocino area?

My husband and I are flying into San Francisco arriving at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon and will rent a car to drive to Mendocino.

We plan to stay at Agate Cove and Heritage House in Mendocino, both of which should have very good ocean views.

My question is, whether we would be missing out on something by not driving up Highway 1 and it's great coastal scenery, since we will be staying on the coast. Is there more dramatic scenery along this route that is more beautiful or interesting than what one might view in and near Mendocino?

I would say our travel style is "relaxed." We are considering taking 101 to 128 to see Redwoods on the way to Mendocino, since we will be enjoying a lot of ocean view. Does this seem like the most desirable choice?

If you do decide to add a night, closer to San Francisco area there is both Muir Woods and then Point Reyes National Seashore - both are nice to see if you do not go directly to Mendocino the first night.

I do not know your lodging price range but Nick;s Cove is very nice - good restaurant at same location.

Driving directly to Mendocino is also nice. There is so many great places to explore around Mendocino.

Are you driving back the same route or going further north. If you drive north from Mendocino to 395 you end up close to Garberville. Just north of Garberville is a very pretty redwood park area called Avenue of the Giants.

There is a lovely inn in the area called Benbow Inn

Yeah - choices......as adding a night either around Point Reyes area or by Avenue of the Giants area is worth while.

Or just relaxing in Mendocino area -

you are in a happy place in terms of your final decision (regardless of what you decide to do).

Enjoy your trip.

Given your time frame, I will stick with my recommendations. Muir Woods and the Point Reyes National Seashore are destinations in themselves and are not really relevant to your journey to Mendocino.
