Driving from Sacramento to Portland along the coast

Would appreciate any advice on which towns to stay in and what to make sure we see along the way. Plan on 2-4 hrs driving each day max.

Sacramento to Mendocino Coast is 4 hrs without stops. Many lovely places to stop along the way. Fort Bragg to Eureka is 21/2 hrs without stops, and now you have more wonderful places to see. if you go up the Oregon Coast it is 10 hrs straight driving to Waldport from FB. It could take a while if you only drive 4 hrs but wonderful trip.

Here is the Oregon Coast forum: tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g1438848-i12636 I recommend reading the relevant threads before posting. When you post, share info about your travel style, travel group, and interests. If you're only driving 2 hours because you have a fussy toddler that's different than only driving 2 hours to allow time for 8 mile hikes during the day.

Have a lovely drive!

We are planning on 4 days to drive to Portland and 2 days there. Plans as of now are 1 night each in Ft Bragg, Eureka, Crescent City and Eugene - any other suggestions? We like to stop in small interesting towns for scenery and history . Also would like lunchtime stop recommendations. Thanks

Two of my favorite coastal towns are Mendocino, CA and Depot Bay, Or.

Definitely stop around Eureka and take in the Redwoods.

Eureka and Crescent City are less than 2 hours apart, so unless you plan to spend all of that day hiking or spending a lot of time seeing all the areas of Redwood NP, you could bump that night north to Brookings (30 minutes more) or Gold Beach (1 hour more).

Why Eugene? That is not a small town!

You could stay on the coast and stay in Yachats, Newport or Depoe Bay.

If you are looking for a lovely, upscale, charming small town, that's Mendocino. Fort Bragg is much larger, spread out (with all services) and more like anytown USA - except of course for the wonderful ocean views from the whole area :-)
