Drive time from Santa Ynez to Carmel

We are attending a wedding in June at the Gainey Vineyard in Santa Ynez. After the wedding, we would like to spend a week in Carmel using it as home base to see all the sights in the Monterey Peninsula area. What is the drive time from Santa Ynez to Carmel? Should we drive it in a day or should we break it up in two days? We would prefer scenic Hwy. 1.

This is a great forum. You make this area of the country come alive and I can't wait for our visit!

If you have the time to break the drive up over 2 days, then you should. SB to Carmel via Highway 1 is approx. a 5 hour drive without stops.

With 2 days, you could make stops along the route at Pismo Beach, Morro Bay and spend the night in lovely Cambria. The next morning, take a tour of Hearst Castle, visit the elephant seal rookery 4 miles north of Hearst, Ragged Point, McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur and Point Lobos.

Here's a link for Cambria which includes a lodging link:

Kibblesmom,

Thanks for the input. We will definitely take the two days and visit the sites you suggest. Also, thanks for the link to Cambria accommodations. I am certain that I will have more questions as we get closer to our trip. Trip Advisor is an invaluable tool in planning vacations!
