Hello. Why don't you look at the websites for the Rosedale Inn and the Butterfly Grove Inn in Pacific Grove? Both places are attractive and quiet, and Pacific Grove is a quieter alternative right next door to Monterey with easy access to the aquarium and beaches. Neither has a very good breakfast, however, but the Rosedale Inn has one like a standard chain hotel. The Butterfly Grove Inn has a pool (no butterflies here in the summer, though). The Rosedale Inn is right across the street from the pretty Asilomar Conference Center. You can just walk through the pretty grounds and cross the road to be on pretty Asilomar Beach. Both are also a short drive from gorgeous Point Lobos State Reserve (get there early or late in the afternoon, though, to avoid the crowds). There are several restaurants to choose from in Pacific Grove, too. Have a great trip!

The rooms at the Best Western Beach Resort are on the small side for a family. Plus, the bathroom door doesn't allow for total privacy. It's slatted and you can see through it!!

I would look at Embassy Suites, Monterey Bay Inn, Best Western Victorian Inn, Casa Munras

The Marriott is a 10-story hotel right in the middle of downtown Monterey. It's an easy walk to the waterfront, wharf, and numerous historic sites. The Beach Resort is relatively isolated, and with the exception of the beach out back there's nothing of interest within walking distance.

The Hilton Garden Inn itself seems to be totally fine (I haven't stayed there, just going by reports from other people and how it looks from the outside). It is in a bit of an odd location though, kind of sandwiched between the freeway and the college. It is a quick drive to most places in the area, but you will have to drive since it really isn't in a very walk able location. If it were me, on a road trip, I would choose someplace within easy walking distance of things so that I could take a break from being in the car for a bit.

thanks, which hotel would you recommend? we can't seem to decide on a hotel. we aren't looking for something extremely expensive (up to $250 for the night).

Best Western Victorian and Casa Munras have already been mentioned, as has the Marriott - all are good properties within easy walking distance of things. The Portola Hotel is another good one.

The Intercontinental is on busy Cannery Row, so noise would likely be an issue. Also, the rooms are quite stark with minimal decor.
