San Francisco to Yosemite to ???

Hello everyone! First trip to California. Two semi-seniors who love nature, the ocean and are on a tight budget. We plan to stay couple days in San Francisco (looking for inexpensiveish lodging and things to do). Then 3 days in Yosemite staying in Curry Village. Will have 3 days left. Should we stay in different towns from Big Sur to Monterey? Or base in one town. Should we squeeze in Cambria/Paso Robles? Is third week of September a good time for whales/Monarchs? Soo many questions! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Hoping for a trip of a lifetime. May be only visit to California. Thank You!!!

Monarch Butterflies over-winter in the area. Don't usually appear until late November, not before that. Different kinds of whales are around most of the year, sometimes more than others.

Have you put your question about San Francisco lodging on that forum? If not, do so, and tell them what kind of lodging you prefer, and your budget for lodging. Warning...September is apt to be convention time, so the city will have lots of visitors and prices go way up. The forum will try to help you.

First, though, go to the right of your screen when you are on the San Francisco forum and read through the Top Questions. Many of the answers to questions you may have will be answered there, and then you can go into the forum more informed to refine your questions to be more specific.

Coming from Yosemite with three days left, I would base myself in the Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove area and enjoy that, with a day trip down the Big Sur Coast and back. I assume you then need to get back to SFO for your flight home?

3 days after Yosemite means 2 nights, so I would recommend basing yourself in the Monterey/Carmel/PG area for 2 nights and plan a day trip down to Big Sur as far as McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

If your dates coincide with the Monterey Jazz Festival, lodging rates could be higher than usual. It's a supply and demand thing.

The following website should have a lodging link: www.seemonterey.com

You can read reviews on any hotels/inns that interest you and book accordingly. But do book ASAP. September is a popular travel month for California.

Since you love the ocean, you might want to look at Borg's Oceanfront Motel in Pacific Grove. The rooms are dated, but the ocean facing rooms have million dollar views and their rates are reasonable. I don't think they have on line booking, either, but you can call direct. www.borgsoceanfrontmotel.com

I don't have much to add to the great advice already given. If your three days coincide with the Monterey Jazz Festival lodgings will be more expensive and more scarce than usual, especially in Monterey. But Carmel and Pacific Grove may be priced more normally since they're farther removed from the festival site at the Monterey Fairgrounds.

Of course, you might want to take advantage of the opportunity and get tickets for this world-class event. http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/

Bear in mind that the Monterey Peninsula is a very compact community, so you can stay in any Peninsula town and still be within a few minutes of the others.

Here are some useful tips for finding suitable lodgings here. www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/lodging.html
