house boating early July in Mt. Shasta

Has anyone rented a house boatin the Mt. Shasta area? How was the experience? Any recommendations on a reputable company? Is the lake crowded with houseboats and/or speedboats?

You should be aware that Mt Shasta and Lake Shasta are not that close together. Mt Shasta is a small town quite north of Lake Shasta which is right outside of Redding.

Houseboating on Lake Shasta is great. It is quite popular and even if there are lots of boats on the lake it has lots of fingers that you can boat into and enjoy some relative solitude.

This year the lake will be quite full so it won't feel too crowded. It's also really large.

we just back from a "mid-week" houseboating trip to lake shasta. I had never been houseboating so was curious what it was all about. Really fun!!! We rented the "Odyssey" houseboat from Shasta Lake Resorts and picked it up at Sugarloaf Resorts. There were 9 adults and 2 kids. The boat was really nice and roomy. Had an outdoor shower we really liked. Hot tub was kinda gross and dirty. Don't let them tell you to drive the boats out of the marina's yourselves. They made us in one of their sister resorts at Lakeview and the wind caught us and we hit the marina! Definitely pay the $20/day for additional insurance. One of our windows broke!

Sleeping outside was absolutely amazing. We took the mattresses from the beds and put them outside on the top deck with our sleeping bags and looked at the stars. Beautiful!! Definitely bring (or rent if you can afford the outrageous prices) a ski boat or jet ski. Keeps the close quarters more bearable and makes for a fun day. Will definitely be back.
