Dinner Suggestions

My husband, myself, and a co-worker are going to be in Napa for one night, next Saturday, August 25th. We have searched the board for different dinner options, but are really stuck on where to go. We are looking for good food that is between $30-$40 a person (not including alcohol). Our favorite foods are Italian or American cuisine and we were hoping to go somewhere in the middle of napa where we can walk around before or after (depending on when we can get a reservation). What suggestions do people have?

One other question, to continue with what I asked about. Has anyone eaten at Piccolino's? What was the experience? We found this restaurant and thought it looked like something we may be interested in.

We ate at Uva when we were in Napa. Great Italian food! They also have small and large portions. My husband and I ordered 3 small portions and shared them. If you go, you have to try the gnocchi with

gorganzola. It melts in your mouth!

seghibs-

We held off making any recommendations, in part b/c we wanted to see which restaurants got sugggested.

There are more than 2 dozen fantastic restaurants in downtown Napa (all walking distance from each other), so trying to find the "one" is tough sometimes.

Piccolinos serves "American" style Italian food (lasagna, spaghetti w/meatballs, veal parmigiana, etc). It's very good. We also like Fillipi's Italian restaurant (across from COPIA)-- similar menu, with the BEST red sauce in town, great food (and incredible pizzas! :)

Other Italians include UVA (Cal Ital), Ristorante Allegria (Northern Ital), and Pizza Azzuro (wood fired pizza). Less than 10 min drive are Villa Romano (Amer Ital) and Bistro Don Giovanni (Northern Italian, perhaps the most well known Italian restaurant in Napa, after Tra Vigne).

Speaking of Tra Vigne (it's in St Helena)-- if you're into food, stay away from this one. When Michael Chiarello ran the place, it was a slice of heaven. And while the atmosphere-- and service-- are still amazing, the food is not.

Also, stay away from Tuscany. This is by far the prettiest Italian restaurant in Napa. But the service and the food are incredibly inconsistent--great one night, and absolutely terrible the next.

When it comes to CA cuisine, Pilar and Julia's Kitchen are at the top of our list for downtown Napa. Both are superb. If you like more French influence, try Julia's. For a bit more international/varied/creative dishes, Pilar is amazing (Pilar has been featured on the Food Network multiple times).

We could go on and on . . . there are more than a dozen other fantastic restaurants in downtown Napa that serve incredible food:

-Coles Chop House- Best steak house in town. Expensive.

-Kelley's No Bad Days Cafe- Home grown comfort food w/attitude

-Cuvee- Stylish CA style cuisine in a gorgeous setting

-NV- Creative CA cuisine in a beautiful setting; great lounge

-Annalien- Western style Vietnamese. Very slow if they're busy

-Bounty Hunter- Beer Can Chicken, 40 wines by the glass,

Guiness/Bass on tap, a Napa Valley institution

-Downtown Joes-Napa's microbrewery. Great beer, good food

-Don Perico- Hole in the wall Mexican w/great Fajitas & Nachos

-Loco's - Tex Mex in a creekside setting

-Bleux Magnolia -Creole meets CA (duck jambalya, lamb T-bones, WOW)

-Zuzu's- Spanish style tapas, no reservations, food is good

-Pearl - CA-Basque. Incredible specials, corn, oysters, steak tacos

-Celedon- CA-Asian Beautiful decor, great service, incredible food.

-Angele- Country French in a casual, yet elegent setting

All of the above are walking distance from the downtown Napa hotels & B&Bs.

Within 5 min drive are Foothill Cafe (just about to reopen) and Zins Valley (great Pork Chops and Calamari). Both are local favorites, with incredible CA style cuisine.

Barber's Q is a brand new place (BBQ) with a quarter-million dollar smoker. Now if they could just figure out how to use it! (they will, we're just impatient 'cause we love BBQ so much-- give them a few more months).

OK, that's just a quick overview of our favorites. We may have forgotten some by accident. And we didn't mention a few on purpose ;)

Hoping that this helps? Finding a great meal in Napa is easy-- deciding on only one place . . . well, that's harder! ;)

Napa,

Thank you for the information. We will be in Napa on the 9th or 10th of Sept. and I was thinking of trying Tuscany's. However, after reading your post, I will go to another on your list.

In your opinion, which on the list is the best?

Thanks,

Lizzy-

That's the whole problem-- we love *all* of the ones we listed above!

If you're dedicated foodies, you'll notice that some places we describe as "good food", as opposed to "great" (or other yummy adjectives). Great is better than "good". ;)

It really comes down to what you like.

Whichever place you decide, please be sure to call NOW and make reservations-- it's not unusual for *all* of the places listed above to be full, almost every night, during the busy season!

Have a great time in Napa,
