There are only 2 real routes into Napa from SF, unless you count adding another 1.5-2 hrs by coming in from the north!

The first is via the Bay Bridge and then Hwy 80, which was horrendous last weekend (they were making repairs to the bridge). The construction is done, as far as I know.

The second route is via the Golden Gate Bridge, up 101, then 37-E, to 12/121. This takes about 15 minutes longer, but the drive is through Marin County and then through the Carneros appellation (where much of the grapes for sparkling wines are grown).

Route 2 is by far the more scenic. You can even pull off the Hwy just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and look at the SF skyline. It's quite beautiful.

Depending on where you're coming from in SF, the trip takes 1-1.5 hrs, on either route 1 or 2.

Comments about bad traffic do not relate to getting here from SF-- they are related to the traffic tie-ups on Hwy 29 up by St. Helena on the weekends (and, during Sept/Oct, on weekdays as well). In other words, the traffic is a problem once you get here, if you don't know the short-cuts (talk to the concierge or innkeeper where you are staying, and they'll get you around the traffic jams).

If you come in from SF via 101 and 37, you can hit Domaine Carneros first (it's on 12/121) before you get to Napa.

Next, I'd go straight up to Mondavi for a tour. You may want to call in advance to get a good time (earlier times in the day are better-- it's less crowded).

Then, go to V. Sattui for lunch.

The only problem with this approach is that it puts you smack dab in the middle of the worst traffic of the day-- going N on Hwy 29 between 11 am and 7 pm. Locals usually take the Silverado Trail north, then cross over to 29 and double back to whereever they're going. But in the case of V Sattui, it may just make more sense to deal with the traffic, since the only crossover road (Zinfandel Lane) is just a few miles north of Mondavi.

I'd save Frog's Leap for last. If you want a tour, be sure to call ahead-- they almost always fill up early.

You should have plenty of time to make it to all of these wineries, provided you get to Domaine Carneros by say 10 or 10:30 and Mondavi by 11:45 for the noon tour.

Hope this helps!
