Your favorite Pinot Noirs in Napa?

We've got a few days coming up in Napa in March.

We're going to do a Platypus Tour again since it was so much fun last time, BUT give ourselves some time to explore some vineyards/tasting rooms on our own.

Can anyone give us a few of your favorite Pinot Noirs in the Napa Valley? Thanks in advance!

I had a bottle of Pahlmeyer's pinot noir recently that I thought was quite good. But I have to say, the last time I was in Napa, the pourer at Silver Oak agreed that if I wanted to taste great pinot noir, I should stay here in Oregon. ;-)

mistletoe has a point-- the cooler weather of the Willamette Valley is ideal for Pinto Noir.

So is the Russian River area, for that matter (about an hour's drive from Napa).

There are areas of the Carneros region, both Napa and Sonoma counties (15 min from Napa), that produce some amazing Pinots, depending on your palette. Ramona Nicholson (Nicholson Ranch) has some good ones. And the folks at Acacia and Ceja make some Pinot, that, to our taste buds, is excellent.

We must admit to having a weakness for Gary Pisoni's Pinot grapes (from Monterey County). Gary sells his grapes to a number of top-tier wine houses. Whenever we see a Pinot in a restaurant that says "Garys' Vineyards", we often try it. And we've *never* been disappointed.

In the Napa Valley, Miner Family makes a few Pinots. One uses Gary's grapes. It's been a long-time favorite for us.

All that being said, Pinots are excruciatingly hard to make. And they vary in flavor and texture soooooo much-- that you can be a big fan of a certain style or type (like us w/Gary's), and have others (w/different palettes) completely disagree with you..

But that's what makes it fun. There is no one "right" way or taste for wine. Viva la difference'! :)

In Napa, we don't have not found too many great pinots places but do really them at Domaine Carneros, if you are open to other areas, we also recently went to Merry Edwards, Paul Hobbs, J Winery, and Amphora, which are all Santa Rosa, Dry Creek area and really liked them. Also have heard great things about J. Rochioli

If you get over to Healdsburg, Gary Farrell produces some very nice Pinots, also. We did a flight tasting of the Pinot Noir there and enjoyed every one of them. :)

Patz & Hall just South of Napa make some pretty good Pinot - they specialise in Pinot and Chardonnay. They also use grapes supplied by Gary Pisoni (as mentioned above).

Their wines really express the fruit characteristics really well; but their tasting room (no appointment needed) is on a business park and not nestled amongst the vines. But as they source their grapes from various growers then you can taste the difference between say a pinot from Russian River and one from the Carneros district and decide which you like best.
