Driving SFO airport to Napa?

Arriving in SFO at 1:00 pm on a Sunday, pick up rental car and driving to downtown Napa for 3 night stay. Any suggestions on most scenic route? Is it worth the drive over GG bridge and maybe on highway 1 for a while to see the coast? Will be driving back to union square area on a Wednesday to stay 4 nights. May not keep the car in SFO the whole time, but would like to see the coast. Thanks!

which part of Hwy1 are you talking about. There is no coastal road to take you to Napa city. you can take 380 to 280 to GG bridge and then head on 101 and 37 and then to Napa.

A car is not needed in SF -- please check the top questions right side of this forum.

Just to clarify SFO is the call sign for the airport (KSFO) while SF or San Francisco is the city.

Do read up about pre-paying tolls on the way back from Napa to SF via the GG bridge (www.goldengate.org/tolls) The toll is one way only southbound

Yes will be coming from San Francisco airport. So on hwy 1 there will be no ocean view?

please look at a map Maps.google.com can show you the route. Highway 1 has ocean views but it depends on where you start and stop. From SFO to Napa unless you want to do a detour south of SFO you can do so but that is getting away from SFO. If you go North then you could take highway 35 to the great highway in SF which goes along the Ocean from Fort Funston to Landsend before turning East That is not highway one .

The GG bridge north of SF does branch into highway 1 but for some miles it goes inland to Point Reyes and then opens up to the Ocean in the Bodega Bay area -- It is a lovely area and worth seeing and folks who go to Sonoma county and stay there can do this but it would be out of the way to Napa city

belo, OP *could* follow the Day Trip North, beginning in Bodega Bay, through the Russian River to the Sonoma Valley to Napa.

HOW_SOME_EVER, there will not be time if they are not arriving until 1 pm,

alh1. from the airport, I would suggest that you take Hwy 380 to 280, cross the city to the Golden Gate Bridge, (watch for the signs) which is Hwy 101. Then Hwy 37 to 121 to Napa.

On the way back to the city if you want to see some coast and a Redwood State Park, as well, follow this "day trip" in REVERSE.

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60713-c139373/San-Fr…

Start by taking the road from the town of Sonoma to the town of Napa (~14 miles). Then pick up the directions for the "day trip" and do it in reverse. Good luck.
