Recommendations for a day trip to Napa

We are staying in SF for a week in the beginning of October and were going to do a day trip to Napa. We were thinking of renting a motorcycle (husband not drinking) and touring a few of the wineries:

-Mondavi

-Frog's Leap

-Far Niente

Any comments or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

hi dpal70 - OK, that's 3 out of 400+ options.

Can you tell us a little more about how you envision your day, so we can help to refine your choices?

Domaine Carneros is a nice winery to visit in Napa also. :).

These guides are great! Thanks NancInNapa. Sorry for the lack of info, we are Canadians visiting Cali for the first time. We are in SF for a week and I insisted on a day in Napa. I am a huge fan of the California Cabs and Zins but was mostly looking to do about 3 wineries as an "Intro to Napa". The information and amount of wineries is very overwhelming so was just looking for a little guidance.

We love our Canadian visitors, welcome!

Good job insisting on a day trip to Napa, it will be well worth it. Now knowing your wine preferences, we can start to develop and itinerary. If you're driving/riding in from SF, stop in at Domaine Carneros (as syrahgirl suggests) - either first stop or last stop.

Here's a pic of the view from the Domaine Carneros terrace late afternoon (note: it can get very busy at end of day for obvious reasons, many visitors from SF make it their last stop):

Try to catch the Mondavi tour at 10am, then you can proceed with 2-3 more wineries. Here are some ideas for cab in the same general area: Turnbull, Cakebread, Silver Oak, Cardinale, Cosentino -- you can pull in just about anywhere and find amazing cabs! Far Niente is probably already booked, but if you can get in, do it! If not, try its sister property, Nickel & Nickel. Do the research about which ones you can drop in on, and which require reservations, you can click thru on each winery on this map:

Then, you should cruise through some of the historic wineries e.g Inglenook, Beringer, Trefethen, Chateau Montelena, and perhaps head over to Silverado Trail and visit some of the cab producers in the Stag Leap AVA, e.g. Regusci, Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Chimney Rock, Clos du Val, etc.

Obviously, you're going to need to create a short list. Start by figuring out which ones require an appointment and then connect the dots. Three to four tastings is about perfect.

A visitor to TA asking questions should never feel they need to apologize.. perhaps we can remember to reply a little less.... condescending? (bye bye post...) But good save Nanci!
