They are number 3 and 4 on TA ratings by travelers. Personally, I prefer a Fairmont over a Marriott, any day - Fairmont just goes that much further to make sure guests feel special, there's a specialness to their hotels that you don't find in Marriotts, even the best Marriotts.

You don't say whether the trip is business or pleasure.

The great thing about the Marriott is that it is across the street from Fashion Island which is one for the greatest outdoor malls in Southern California.... in my opinion. It is also close to Balboa Island, another great place to venture AND Corona Del Mar...you can shop till you drop, go sight seeing, lay on the beach and dream about owning one of those yachts in the harbor. Fashion Island has GREAT restaurants and a theater inside and the Big Newport theater on the outside. It is also beach close too. The Marriott would be my choice.

If you are strictly for business, then choose the other. Close to airport, close to other hotels as well. Some nice restaurants but not a touristy area.

She will love the Pageant of the Masters....that is if you can peal her away from Fashion Island (which is also having the summer concert series going on.)

The pageant of the Masters is AWESOME! There is a whole "village" of shops, restaurants and art galleries right next to the pageants.

The beach right there is also Main Beach. Once on the sand, if you walk to the right, you will see the tide pools. Any "kid" will like that.

You should stop at Crystal Cove and have breakfast/lunch at the Beachcomber and walk the beach where "Beaches" was filmed. Have a shake at the Shake Shack (iconic) as you leave. While in Newport Coast area...keep an eye out for celebrities...mostly star athletes.

On Balboa Island, take a walk, get a Balboa Bar (iconic there) and take the ferry over to see the Wedge (the largest waves ever)..drive north up the peninsula and stop at Newport Beach Pier.

You must stop by Huntington Beach's pier and spend an afternoon walking/eating/shopping on Main Street or simply eat at Ruby's at the end of the pier over the water. The film crews are filming "Beach Patrol" a new show airing next year. HB is about a 20 minute drive north from Fashion Island.

We've stayed at both, but we like the Marriott Newport Beach the best. It has a great pool area, and a fabulous spa. One of the days, after our treatments, we stayed in a cabana at the spa pool and had lunch. We had a top floor suite, and the view of the ocean was beautiful. Could walk across the street to Fashion Island or the movie complex and many great restaurants to choose from within a short drive.
