Mix business with sightseeing

I will be traveling solo on biz to Newport Beach this Oct. I will have about a day and a half to sightsee on my own. What is the best way to get around from Fashion Island area where I will be staying? What are some "must see" attractions...I have NEVER been to CA!

Barbie,

Depends on your age and what you want to do. If you like the ocean and beach I have listed some ideas below.

You can do much just there in Fashion Island during the day. But see all that real quick and move on.

You can either rent a car (you can find a good deal or I can list some) and get around or just take a taxi. You will have to call 800 my taxi.

1. I would recommend that you go to Laguna Beach and see the views there. It is amazing to take a walk by Las Brisas and walk up the views are breathtaking. Great places to eat for dinner and lunch, and good nightlife. It depend on what day you will be in town will determine where you go for nightlife.

2. Spend a afternoon and go to Newport Beach and rent a bike and ride the boardwalk. See that and cross over to Balboa Island and have dinner in Corona del Mar, about a 5 min drive from Fashion Island.

Must see things: Disneyland, Laguna Beach Tidepools, LA Sunset, Rodeo, and Hollywood (45 min no traffic), Balboa and Newport Piers, Huntington Beach Main Street

those are some ideas just let me know if anything interests you I listed and I will give you more details

other people will give you must sees too.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am 40 and married so I am not interested in the nightlife as far as clubbing, but I do like a nice restaurant/pub out door decking with nice music. The views, the beach all interest me. I have never seen the Pacific Ocean so I want a spectacular view. Sunday is the day I arrive and have 1/2 day thru the late evening, then Wednesday I have most of the day, then Thursday night and early morning Friday. I have all the high end stores ie. Nieman M, Saks here in S FL, so I am interested in unique one of a kind shopping.

Thanks!

You can take a taxi to Laguna Beach and in the afternoon start at Las Brisas and walk up the paths Heisler Park for your spectaular views.

see here

http://radified.com/heisler/HTML_01/

see pages 2 and 3 too

The sunset there is great. Or Las Brisas for SUNSET drinks, but would not recommend dinner there. Much better options and there are much better restaurants.

Walk down the hill south about 4/5 blocks to either of the restaurants below.

Do drinks at sunset and make reservations after the sunset and eat at 230 Forest or Javiers.

230 Forest - http://www.230forestavenue.com/

Javiers - http://www.javiers-cantina.com/

In the morning breakfast at The Cottage right across from Las Brisas.

Then spend the Wednesday day and have lunch at the Studio at the Montage resort outside on the deck see the website for views and things

http://www.studiolagunabeach.com/

see the tidepools at Crystal Cove - maybe get a guide they have them available on the website. It is so beautiful and so many great little creatures of nature there in the rocks and you will love it. Not many people from Cali take time to see it.

www.crystalcovestatepark.com/tidepools.htm

for Wednesday night or Thursday night

The next night I would recommend driving up north up the coast for some great places,

Bandera Restaurant - http://www.hillstone.com/

click on Bandera on the left then the Corona del Mar Location and Menu

(mostly ribs, prime rib, meat) just 5 min from Fashion Island there is their sister restaurant

Gulfstream, bigger and has more fish on the menu. See the website above again and Gulfstream Newport Beach

or

Quiet Woman - http://www.quietwoman.com/

across the street from Bandera on Margarite and PCH a small brick entry next to a Real Estate Office and Liquor Store

Later live music

Both have great food and wonderful wine lists and are always written up by Wine Spectator.

also right there in Fashion Island there is a Irish Pub name Muldoons. Good atmosphere website http://www.muldoonspub.com/default.asp

Shopping that is unique to the area, botique shops in Laguna Beach, also about 10 min away Main Street Balboa Island but Laguna Beach is the best.

Bardot Collection is my favorite boutique in Laguna Beach, It is on the coastline side. You will love to shop at the many boutiques near Main Beach. Have lunch while there as well. Laguna is beautiful...this is a must at least one day.

If you don't go to Crystal Cove (which you should) there are tide pools to the right of the beach at Main Beach (facing the ocean). At Crystal Cove, The Beachcomber restaurant is on the sand and you can walk by the cottages down there where the film "Beaches" was filmed.

I think you would like to shop Balboa Island in Newport Beach. It is one street of boutique shops and food. It is just really pretty, really expensive and chalked full of boats in the harbor there. It is not too far from Fashion Island.Try a Balboa Bar (an ice cream bar) while there and then take the ferry across to Balboa Peninsula. Check out the Balboa Pier, Newport Pier and go see the huge waves at the wedge.

There is a movie theater in Fashion Island but also across the street is Edwards Big Newport. One theater boast a giant movie screen (Main theater) , others some with stadium seating. The main theater seats more than 1000 people so you see how big it is.

I second the idea of spending the day in Laguna Beach - can't get more California than that, it's a lovely area.
