Farewell to Sage

Two of my friends and I will go for a last meal at Sage on Friday.

So sad to see another excellent restaurant be forced out by a greedy landlord (Irvine Company).

I will miss Sage and Cottage in Laguna Beach.

A place I'll return to now is Golden Truffle in Costa Mesa. I stopped going there a few years ago because I couldn't stand the overbearing pretentious maitre d who made my skin crawl. I took my office staff there for lunch today and found the place beautifully remodeled , with new staff and a few good old hands. The food and service were good and the prices more reasonable than before.

My Newport Beach favorite -- Pescadou remains for now.

I hope everyone will make a point to support the good unique independent restaurants. If we don't, we'll soon be stuck with

nothing but chain outlets with formula food.

The Irvine Company has be sweeping out lots of long standing tennants. I miss the El Torito Grill's sunday brunch in Fashion Island, and the Coco's that I used to go to there for breakfast as a kid.

Yes -- Even though El Torito Grill and Coco's are chains, they were decent quality and dependable and had a neighborhood charm that kept locals coming back. The 20 something leasing staff at IC just don't get it.

Coco's is a chain started in Corona del Mar by the McIntosh's and similarly El Torito has deep OC ties as Larry Cano lived in Newport and did a great deal of his expansion in the OC market early on.

I miss Daily Grill too, another victim of the IC's "upgrade" to Fashion Island. Can Muldoon's be far behind?

Whole Foods, Fig & Olive, Le Pain Quotidien, Native Foods.... oh so chic.... nothing as pedestrian as chicken fried steaks, unless of course it is grass fed beef in a truffle infused batter....

Oh so chic and expensive . . . .They have even driven away the rich residents of Newport Beach. People with money don't throw it away.

I ate at Sage tonight. It was packed. The server said they are expecting to open at another location in 4 or 5 months and that there were a couple of Newport Beach locations in contention. The Hostess said they are still looking for a location. The employees will be laid off. Let's hope a new location is coming.

Oh yes remdog. Our last visit (I assume that's what you meant) was very positive. I had the lamb sirloin and it was perfect (with a wonderful glass of wine). The service was very good, considering how busy they were. The noise level was very high but that was also due to the crowd. It was good to see the locals come out in support of a restaurant that has served the community so well for 15 years.
