One week to explore LA to San Diego based in Newport Beach

My husband and I are spending one week at the Marriott Newport Coast Vilas. We would like to experience the highlights in LA and San Diego and also the Southern California coastline. We would appreciate any suggestions about must see and do's and suggestions about restaurants.

Hi

I recommend that you look at 3 specific forum pages: California, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Read the Top Questions about ___ on each forum page, found in the upper right. There isn't any way to see everything in just a week, but with some tips from folks who love that area you should be able to develop your own list of Must See or Must Do things.

Are you interested in theme parks, walking, photography, museums, sustainable food / dining, fashion, shopping, animals, water sports, movie making, neighborhood explorations, beach, cycling, art, ....?

When will you be here? What kind of restaurants are you looking for?

Ethnic food that OC does really well is Mexican, Vietnamese and some excellent Chinese, but LA, especially the San Gabriel Valley, has the best Chinese.

There are also some great farm-to-table or snout-to-tail or gastropubs in all three counties, LA, OC and SD.

"trust the locals, not the crazy people"

Scott sounds pretty correct in his assessment of cuisine in LA, Orange County and San Diego.

I think everyone needs more information about what kind of food you like, what kind of sights you would like to see and do to give you the best advice. (except one person whole will recommend the same things every time no matter what you say interests you)

I am a Marriott timeshare owner. Born and raised in So Cal. I recently moved back here from three hears in IL. While we lived in IL and came "home" for visits, our favorite place to stay was the Newport coast villas. We loked being near Newport, Pasadena (college football games) and family in the South Bay and OC. also, It is close to pelican Hill and the Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, which have their own wonderful history (you should definitely hit the beachcomber restaurant). You will be about 90 minutes from San Diego and about an hour from Los Angeles without traffic. There is a lot to see aNd do along this stretch so it really depends on when you are visiting and what you like to do when you travel.

You could spend one day driving down coast hwy to San Diego stopping where you like with lunch somewhere like the Marine Room in La Jolla ending with time on Coronado Island. Spend a day exploring Newport. Spend another day driving up the coast the other direction ending in Belmont Shore, Long Beach or the South Bay. Maybe you don't want to drive, but want to see some great museums (Getty, Exposition Park). Maybe a day in Hollywood is what you want. Probably after you've narrowed it down based on what the DE said in the first response, then you can come back with more questions. People have a lot to say about visiting this area.

Have fun!
