Carlsbad to LA via Newport Beach

I am coming over to California in mid October from the UK. Spending a week in Carlsbad then driving to Newport Beach for a few days before heading up to LA. I have a 6 year old with me, is there anywhere to avoid or not to miss along the route?

Also what will the weather be like at that time of year

With a young child, how about Disneyland and/or Knotts Berry Farm?

Here's some climate data for Newport Beach:

weather.com/outlook/…USCA0764

and for Los Angeles:

Disneyland and Knotts are not along the route to Newport Beach. I suspect you'll be going there after you get to NB.

Along the route to Newport Beach, you could get off the freeway at Capistrano Beach (Follow the signs for Route 1 Beach Cities) and drive north along the coast through the scenic towns of San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano (stop to see the Mission), Laguna Beach, and then on to Newport Beach.

LSCATS thanks for your reply. Are the towns you suggest going into on the drive all coastal?

Is Newport Beach a town small enough not to need a rental or should we keep hold of it for ease?

You definitely need a car in Newport Beach.

And yes, all the towns that Cats mentioned are on Coast Highway which is definitely the way you want to go for sights. As you get near the end of San Clemente you'll see the sign that says "Beach Cities". That is the start of the famous California Highway 1. See the map below.
