how to get from Oakland Airport to Amtrak Station Emeryville

Is there any public transport that will do this? Or will I need to get a cab?

The transit.511.org website will show you how to make any public transit transfer in the SF Bay area.

Put in your starting point:

OAK (in the city of Oakland) -- OAK is the abbreviation for Oakland Airport

and your ending point

AMTRAK (in the city of Emeryville)

For a 1:45 pm weekday transfer, there are 2 routes offered, both requiring 3 conveyances in succession and taking between 60 and 75 minutes. Both routes begin the same with a ride on the 'Air BART' which is a shuttle bus running between OAK and the Coliseum station of BART (the metro rail system). This first leg takes 15 minutes and costs $3. Continuing, both routes include a transfer to the BART train at Coliseum, getting off at MacArthur Station ($2 fare, 16 minute ride).

Then the routes differ as far as the bus that you take when you arrive at the MacArthur Station. These onward buses are free and take about 15 minutes. There are variations in the amount of walking you'll need to do (it's disclosed to you on the route listing) based upon which bus you select so study the routes carefully.

Just to add to what hopskip says -- there is a free Emery-go-round bus from MacArthur station to the Amtrak station.

Another option is to to not get down at MacArthur but to go further to the Richmond BART Station. The Amtrak station connects to the BART station and therefore you avoid one bus ride. This would be better at night instead of the MacArthur station

1. Which Amtrak train are you taking? There is a station at the Oakland Coliseum, across a pedestrian bridge from the BART station, that also has Amtrak service. Use this station if possible, as it cuts out all of the transferring nonsense discussed above.

2. To clarify, if you have to go to Emeryville, it is a 3-step process. Take AirBART or AC Transit Route 73 from OAK to the Coliseum Station, then take BART to MacArthur, and finally transfer to the Emery-Go-Round Hollis route. The total trip time is 45-60 minutes, depending on how close your transfers end up being.

3. If you can't catch your Amtrak train at the Oakland Coliseum station, try catching the train from Richmond instead. Once you get on BART, as described in #2, you would stay on until Richmond. BART and Amtrak share the Richmond station, so you wouldn't have to haul your luggage on the shuttle bus.
