Need help with Temp Apartment! Advice?

My friend and I are doing a six week voluntary work placement in West Oakland for the duration of August and some of September, and time is running out to find an apartment. We are coming from the UK, and knowing what websites to look on is tricky, everyone has been recommending Craigslist but we haven't had any luck so far.

Anyone have any suggestions?! We need to keep it cheap, alot of the hostels are $60+ per night, which is alot to pay for 6 weeks.

Thanks for any help,

Craigslist is really the only place I can think of.

search in the East bay. Berkeley may have something since it's a college town.

(Students are likely to try to sublet when out for summer to save money).

But it's not cheap.

Look for somewhere close to BART. Although if you find it close enough you can just use the bus.

Craigslist even has a sublet/temporary section.

A couple of examples:

You do know that West Oakland is a sketchy part of town? It's not as bad as some say, but it is sketchy for sure, although parts of it are getting better.

West Oakland is getting less sketchy by the day. It's now swarming with hipsters and artists. I just looked at the sublets on craigslist and saw rooms for a "queer anarchist," and a "chill space" in a "collective-ish" household. You shouldn't have any hesitation renting a sublet in West Oakland now, and save yourself a few $$.

What about Lake Merritt Hotel & Apartments? if you find a studio or efficiency that works for the two of you, you may be able to get it for $79 - $89/night which is around $40/person/night. And it is in a good part of town. I think you could take BART from the Lake Merritt station to the West Oakland station.

Craigslist is the go-to website for rental listings. However, its short-term rental options are a bit limited.

For short-term rentals, you should consider VRBO and AirBNB. You may have better luck with either of them. If worse comes to worse, you can try using http://www.couchsurfing.org or booking a regular hotel room for the first couple nights. That would allow you time to get something permanent set up.

West Oakland is still a marginal neighborhood. Please be careful with where exactly you stay, and keep your wits about you. Feel free to ask about specifics here. I am more than happy to help. You may want to stay in a safer nearby area. Depending upon where exactly you will be working, Emeryville or the Oakland neighborhood called Temescal may be preferred.
