We are traveling from Hawaii to Anchorage, Alaska with Alaska Air and managed to work in a stop over in California, landing at the Oakland Airport at 10:30pm on Friday, September 20th and departing Sunday the 22nd at 6:45pm. Yes, it's a quick stop. Oakland wasn't our first choice, but it was the best deal price wise and schedule wise.
We spend our Saturday and what we have of Sunday split between a few "tourist" things and some shopping. We are both "chubby" (or morbidly obese as my doctor puts it...) and will be hitting some fat people stores that we don't have in Alaska.
So, my question. What area should we look at staying in. I've heard bad things about Oakland, but I know better than to believe everything I hear. I'm sure there's bad parts of town and good parts of town.
We are open to staying anywhere within an hour of the Oakland Airport. We will have a rental car and I feel pretty confident in my ability to get around. Would saying "anywhere in the Bay area" be an accurate way to describe our search?
Our budget is $100 to $150 a night. Nothing elegant, but clean, friendly and safe.
We are fine going with a chain hotel. I'm just not sure what area to be looking in. So I though I'd ask the experts.
(In Alaska we have a town, a whole bunch of space, then another town. Looking at the map of the bay area there's a bunch of different towns... San Fransico, Oakland, San Jose, Alameda, Freemont, Emeryville, etc.. all right next to each other.)
