Oxnard- misc. questions

Next week, we are making the PCH drive from LA to SF. I originally wanted to stay in Santa Barbara for the first stop but based on rates and availability, I am looking at alternative cities like Oxnard and had a few questions:

Is Oxnard safe for a family?

What is the best hotel: Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites? We generally like Embassy Suites but reading the reviews it sounds like it is not like a typical Embassy Suites.

Is the drive time to Santa Barbara about 45 minutes?

Is a trip to the Channel Island a day long adventure?

Thanks

Parts of Oxnard are crime infested gang hotbeds and should not be gone through at night.

That being said, none of those three properties are near the bad areas. All three places are great for just going and getting a good night's sleep.

All three are very close to each other and are near the newer Riverpark Collection shopping area. There are some nice restaurants there (the GEN Korean BBQ place just opened two weeks ago and is really good) shops, and theaters. It's very pleasant to walk around in the evenings.

The Camarillo Outlets are about 5 min away also.

Driving to Santa Barbara, look for a 40 minute drive. Traffic can get bogged down a little in the afternoons when going through Ventura but not badly.

A trip to the Channel Islands is indeed a full day. If you have little ones, it may be better to take them to the Channel Islands Visitor center in the harbor. The kids can experience some tide pools, touch some animals, see some videos, and then play on the adjacent beach.

Yes.....

My opinion of Ventura though has changed over the last few years.....for the negative.....and I hate to besmirch a community that I visit all the time.

Ventura, or the community leaders, have done a very poor job of making their beautiful city a welcoming place. Their Main Street can be a top destination but is currently filled with multiple charity clothing spots, grungy antique shops, a flop house, some bars, and a number of panhandlers. The street is horribly filthy and needs a thorough scrubbing. The Mission at the end of Main St is still a nice place but nowhere near some of the other California missions.

The Harbor area of Ventura is good and has some decent restaurants and beautiful walkways. Andria's Seafood is the go to place for fresh seafood.

Look into Carpenteria just south of Santa Barbara, pleasant beach and a number of places to stay. Lodging should be cheaper than Santa Barbara.

Oxnard is only an hour from LA. Why not go further beyond Santa Barbara? Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo?

We will also probably stop later at San Luis Obispo but wanted to find a place fairly close to Santa Barbara for the first stop.

Then try Carpinteria as suggested. Also look into Solvang or Los Olivos further north.
