B&B Survivor for Mid-May Stay - Pacific Grove vs. Carmel

So, we have narrowed our 2-night stay on the peninsula to the following candidates in a price range we can accomodate (total for 2 nights)...from $188 to $243:

Carmel (Green Lantern Inn): Pros - Location (walking distance to Scenic Rd/beach/main street).

Pacific Grove (Sunset Inn): Pros - Location (walking distance to beach, Point Pinos Lighthouse)

Cons - Used to serve continental breakfast, recently discontinued

(Bide-a-Wee): Pros - Location (walking distance to beach, Point Pinos Lighthouse)

(Pacific Gardens): Pros - Location (walking distance to beach, near lighthouse),

Wine & Cheese from 5-7

(Gosby House): Pros - Breakfast Buffet, Wine & Hors d'Oeuvres 4:30-6:30

Cons - Location (not as close to beach as other 3, access to scenery)

If the $50-for-2-nights range in price among the 5 choices is not an issue, does anyone out there have experiences (good, bad, or so-so), actual stays, or opinions that would tilt the scale for me as I am stuck giving them comparable scores?? BTW, we are a couple in our mid-50's from TX, so, even though we probably won't be staying in the room or on property that much, the location, property/room amenities, and access to scenery are important to us.

I don't know anything about the Green Lantern Inn in Carmel.

Sunset Inn, Bide A Wee and Pacific Gardens Inn are located in a wooded area near Asilomar Beach and the PG coastline, but not within comfortable or safe walking distance from town. You would have to drive for dinner plans.

Gosby House Inn is just a few blocks up from Lover's Point and the rec trail. A few rooms at Gosby have bay views, most notably Jack's Peak, Point Lobos and Harrison McKinley. Jack'Peak and Point Lobos rooms have a generous balcony you can sit out on and enjoy the view. There are several excellent restaurants within walking distance of Gosby House: Fandango, Passionfish. Max's Grill and Pepper's Mexicali Cafe.

I find it interesting that you give these properties equal scores, since they cover a pretty wide range of lodging styles. Sunset Inn, Bide-a-Wee, and Pacific Gardens are all basically motels. Nice ones, certainly, but they don't compare on the luxury scale to the other places on your list.

The Green Lantern is sort of a bungalow style property, with lots of early Carmel charm. It's in a forested residential area, so it's quiet. Gosby House is a beautiful old Victorian house typical of Pacific Grove's B&B stock.

BTW, Sunset Inn isn't real close to the lighthouse. It's walkable, but not close enough to get to on a whim. It'd be close to an hour round-trip on foot.

If it were me I'd pick Gosby or Green Lantern, especially if prices are competitive with the others.

Bide a Wee is a really clean, comfortable property. We just stayed at Colonial Terrace Fri, night for the second time and enjoyed our stay there. It is very close to the ocean. :).

It might be helpful to look up these properties on googlemaps.com and click on "street view". It will give you a true view of the property from the street and you can "travel" around the area to get a better feel for where you would be located and the walkability of everything close by ...

The Green Lantern Inn is located in a residential, wooded area in Carmel but is close to the beach and just blocks to Ocean Ave. which is the heart of Carmel Village.

The Gosby House is located on "Main St." Pacific Grove which is Lighthouse Ave. It is close to restaurant and shops and a short drive to the beach and Cannery Row. It looks very cute!

The Sunset Inn IS actually walking distance to Point Pinos Lighthouse. It is in a quiet, wooded area in Pacific Grove also close to the beach & golf course. This is a nice motel. (We usually stay at the Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages next door - only stay on the cottage property which includes a fabulous, made-to-order breakfast each morning)

The Bide-A-Wee and Pacific Gardens Inn are motels with basic amenities that are down the way from the Sunset Inn. They aren't far from the beach but are also not within walking distance to anything else.

I'm with Mr. Toy on this one ... I'd go with the Green Lantern or Gosby House if I were choosing from the accomodations listed.
