There's definitely quite a few things you won't want to miss! One of our most family-friendly favorites is The Living Desert in Palm Desert, which is a zoo and botanical garden featuring wildlife from deserts around the world. They have children's programming, animal encounters and feeding experiences, and even behind-the-scenes tours available.
Another fun activity is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. It's the largest rotating tramcar in the world and takes you from Palm Springs to the San Jacinto Mountains, where there are hiking trails/nature walks to explore. You'll also have incredible views of Greater Palm Springs below.
If you and your 11-year-old enjoy the outdoors, you might make time for a hike at Tahquitz Canyon or Coachella Valley Preserve. Both offer easier hikes with views of the natural side of Greater Palm Springs, and you'll see local wonders like palm oases, too.
There is also the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, where most exhibits are hands-on and interactive.
