9 day stay

We will be in Palm Springs (two gay males, mid-late 40's) for 10 days in the August heat after Vegas & Joshua Tree NP stays

Would appreciate recommendations from others to make the most of our stay .. have been before on several occasions as a solo traveller but never as a couple

Whilst some poolside lounging will be undertaken together with dining and drinking in the main PS venues, we plan on taking a few excursions (we have a car) plus visiting some gay bars in and around PS

Looking on the net these seem a bit thin on the ground

Any advice please?

Thanks in advance

There aren't a lot of Gay Bars "around" PS except in neighboring Cathedral City.....

and I'm sure you know to hit Arenas Road in PS for the majority of popular ones.

Depending on the week you are there, check out if anything is going on in Idyllwild, a small mountain town not too far from the area. They have a summer Jazz Festival, art and wine shows etc...it's a pretty drive up and..it's nice and cool up there too.

Mostly, stay hydrated ( water ) and do your shopoing/running around in the early or evening hours to avoid the heat.

Where are you staying?

We were in Rancho Mirage in April and enjoyed dinners at Wally's Desert Turtle and BluEmber @ the Rancho Las Palmas Resort, you may want to check these places out. For some good shopping, we loved Palm Desert, Tommy Bahama's Cafe is there, a nice place for a casual meal. Have fun! :)

Get up and out of the heat by driving the Palms-to-Pines Scenic Byway (Highway 74) to end up in Idylwild, California, a mountain resort town. We ate lunch at the Gastro Gnome restaurant and it was good. Mt. San Jacinto State Park is just north of Idylwild and offers mountain scenery and hiking at cooler temperatures than down in Palm Springs. Alternatively just take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and that takes you up to a point within Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Anything to get out of the heat of the desert! Even Big Bear Lake/San Bernardino National Forest would be a good escape. Big Bear Lake is so built up now and has so much traffic that it's essentially spoiled. But the eastern area (Highway 38) is much more unspoiled and natural.

In short, go up in the mountains to escape the heat of Palm Springs. You might even consider a drive to Julian in San Diego County, take the 74 out of Palm Springs to the 371 to Aguanga, then the 79 through Warner Springs and Santa Ysabel, to Julian. The best apple pie in Julian is at Apple Alley Bakery on the east side of the street. You could also continue south to Sunrise Highway and Laguna Mountain Recreation Area, though this would be a long drive from Palm Springs and not that much different from Mt. San Jacinto State Park.

You will be here at the hottest time of the year. The area is at its quietest then. The pool may be 96 degrees at that time of year. Go to the art museum in PS, as well as an early morning walk around The Living Desert in Palm Desert (earlier the better). Best shopping is in Palm Desert, as well as the outlet malls in Cabazon. For a peek at the American wild west, take a drive to Pioneertown northwest of Palm Springs. Not a lot there, except for a sort of authentic western bar/restaurant and small western street where they used to film old western movies. I like the landscape in that area too.

Catch up on movies, nothing better than a nice a/c theater in the middle of the daytime heat. The River entertainment center is good for that in Rancho Mirage on Bob Hope Dr and Hwy 111. Walk around and choose a restaurant for dinner afterward.

On Thursday nights in downtown PS is Villagefest. It's open 7:30 to 10 PM and has booths of crafts, food, music, etc.

Have fun.
