First time visitor

We will be in Palm Springs (staying in LaQuinta area) for 4 1/2 days arriving on Sept 12. I know it will be hot and we have a great house with pool to enjoy. In the mornings, before it gets too hot we had planned

to do one of these each day: Take the Aerial Tramway / drive the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway /

visit the Coachella Valley Preserve / go to Joshua Tree Park (Thurs night go the the downtown

street market)

Does this seem like a good overview? Is there one part of Joshua Tree that is better or should we do the

whole loop - going in from one end and coming out the other?

Thanks for any advice you can give us.

We usually combine going up the tram in the heat oh the afternoon because the weather is so nice at the top, with Villagefest in the evening, both on Thursday. Saves doing the half hour drive twice.

Definitely plan to see the indian canyons near downtown PS. Hike thru the streams and palm groves.

Also go to the Living Desert.

If you go to the preserve, go early and hike out to Mc Callum pond.

You could do the loop of JT. Enter at the west entrance at the town of JT then exit at the south at Cottonwood. From there you can cross I-10 and head down scenic Box Canyon Road, cross the canal and head back to LQ via Mecca. The Oasis Date Gardens are off 111 in Thermal. You could stop in for a date shake.Or stop for a date shake at Shields at 111/Jefferson.

The Joshua Trees are in the higher north end of the park in the Mojave Desert. The end near Cottonwood is in the Colorado Desert.

Between PS and JT is Pioneertown, with the western movie sets and Pappy and Harriets restaurant/bar/music venue.

If you head down near the Salton Sea and Niland, you run into the mud volcanoes and Salvation Mountain.

For burgers and beer in LQ, try Burgers and Beer near Costco.

Beer Hunter has a good beer selection.

I second the Cochella Valley Preserve. It is one of the neatest things around.

Here is a video about it:

I also suggest the living desert:

Other popular things to do in the area include the many Casinos (gambling), and the popular Outlet Malls and related things in the Cabazon area.
