Best neighbourhoods / areas around Palm Springs to stay

I am joining my husband on a business trip and we will be staying at Riviera Palm Springs on Indian Canyon Drive for 4 nights. We are going down early on April 2 and have 5 nights to stay somewhere else and explore the area. We like nature, short walks, swimming, some shopping, cycling, jogging. We will rent a car and likely book an airbnb. Would like to be close to some sort of town with amenities -- we do like to be able to walk to things -- restaurants, shops, but not at the expense of being in a noisy or not so nice area.

I have never been to Palm Springs and started looking for accommodations only to be overwhelmed at all the different areas -- do we want to be right in Palm Springs or in one of the outlying areas? Any suggestions on pros and cons of different areas, plus any neighbourhoods to stay away from?

Thanks very much :)

Are you looking for a hotel or home rental?

Hi -- we will likely go with a home rental -- lots around but just unsure of what area to stay in -- right in Palm Springs or in one of the outlying areas like Palm Dessert, etc.... We do prefer smaller communities and we will be right in Palm Springs for 4 nights during the conference.

There are several towns that neighbor Palm Springs....each with a different appeal. The towns of Palm Desert and La Quinta have more of a suburban feel to them compared to Palm Springs. Lots of VRBO options in these cities. Palm Springs generally offers more of a village atmosphere, with some neighborhoods being better than others. You would probably like the southern or middle parts of Palm Springs better than the north...which has some sketchy neighborhoods and airplane noise. The neighborhoods of Indian Canyons, The Mesa, Vista Las Palmas, Las Palmas, The Movie Colony, The Tennis Club, and Twin Palms are all nice neighborhoods. Palm Springs is where you will find the Indian Canyons for great hiking and sightseeing as well as the tram going up to Mount San Jacinto. The shopping district of Palm Springs offers small non-chain stores (and too many vacant storefronts) where as the towns of Palm Desert and La Quinta will offer more shopping of all kinds. Rancho Mirage is a nice residential town with many golf courses and fine restaurants. Note that most Rancho Mirage communities are in private gated communities. Most rentals in all these areas have pools.

That's all good feedback above. Palm Springs will generally be a bit more "walkable" from hotel properties than the other many fine destination resort cities. The 'heritage' properties---Casa Cody, Korakia, The Willows, and several others are nice experiences. Another place you might want to check out is The Sparrow Hotel---really fabulous.

In terms of chances of wind in PS, try to stay south of Vista Chino and west of Sunrise Way.

Agree w tomt. Unless you're paying top dollar and staying at Two Bunch Palms I'd stay away. Even if you stay there, there isn't good tourism infrastructure or walking desirability off the hotel grounds.

My wife and I just spent 5 days in Feb.) at the Coyote Inn:

- web site: http://www.coyoteinn.net/

-map location: http://goo.gl/maps/2LF75

It was a very good location; great hosts and nice pool/hot tub (see TA reviews on it):

- tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32847-d124958-…

We had a car and did not need it. Many restaurants/shopping within easy walking distance.

Don't miss Village Fest on Thursday evening (see: http://villagefest.org/ ) Lots of great stuff to see/buy, people watch, and eat (don't eat dinner at a restaurant this night - get it from a vendor!)

Good luck,

Scott
