The fastest and most direct (per google maps) i.e. Highways 101 & 154 takes you right through scenic Santa Barbara County wine country to Santa Barbara City, see www.sbcountywines.com for information. I would later join Highway 1 at Oxnard to Malibu.

Between Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara (or rather Gaviota, which is a few miles north of SB) there are no ocean view roads or highways, so you would either stay on Highway 101 until the ocean comes into sight at Gaviota or take Highway 154 through Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, which takes you southeast toward Santa Barbara. Your views are of a mountain range, farms, ranches and vineyards, until coming down the hill into SB.

Highway 1 is combined with Highway 101 in the Gaviota area all the way down to Oxnard where it branches off on its own toward Malibu.

You will see a sign for Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) when you pass through Pismo Beach, but this route does NOT take you along the ocean. Just farm and ranch land. The same type of scenery you'll see traveling on Highway 101, so just stay on 101 down to Santa Barbara. You can take Highway 154 near Los Olivos if you'd like. Many swear it saves time, but I don't really buy into that. It might be true if you don't get stuck behind some slow poke who holds everyone else up behind them. Lots of bad accidents on that highway, too.

For a variation you can get off on the State Beach Road about 15 miles south of Santa Barbara, 10 miles north of Ventura for 9 miles of Old Highway One that runs directly adjacent as a frontage road to the 101.

You can stop at several places/coves and get down to the water if you want, along that stretch (called locally the Rincon, and containing Faria Beach and Emma Wood Beach Parks, both nice places to stop for a few minutes of sand).

Bates Road also has a great parking lot and steep path down to a lovely cove, about 10 miles south of SB or so.
