Sacremento Amtrak Station on I Street

We will be arriving in Sacremento in June on the Califorina Zephyer at about 5:00 pm then boarding the Coast Starlight at midnight heading home to Oregon.

Is the Amtrak station on I Street near any good restaurants and shopping that we could spend a few hours between trains. Is this an area we could safely wallk around in in the evening or do you advise cabbing. Thank you for your advice.

You can walk west on I street 1 block and then go under the freeway and be in Old Sac.

You can walk 1 block south and be on J Street which is the border of the Downtown Plaza. It goes from J Street to L Street and from 4th to 7th.

I've never felt unsafe in Sacramneto. Some people feel threatened by the homeless or the panhandlers but I never have.

Sacto has great evenings in the summer due to the warm weather. It can be really pleasant after the sun goes down.

There should be plenty of good dining options. What do you like?

With you 6hr layover, you can easily catch a RiverCats baseball game. An easy 15min walk from Amtrak across the river to W.Sacramento. The stadium and the food is one of the best on the west coast.

We truly enjoy a variety of cooking styles. Since we are in town only on a layover if their were a very well thought of local eatery, not a chain, within 3 to 5 blocks of the train station that would be our choice. Thank you for your response.

Since I stuck out on my ball game idea. Try 4th Street Grill - on the corner of 4th str & L str. Walk south on 5th street thru the downtown mall to L, turn rt on L to 4th. Right across the street from Macy's.

I like the Firehouse Restaurant very much. Special for the food, special for the atmosphere, special for the history. Then special surroundings for walkabout afterwards.

I'd suggest reservations, but then the Zephyr could eat up the time... But if you can catch a phone cell signal while en route if you're delayed, then no worries.

Wow - thank you all very much, I will check out these eaterys on line, lots of choices.

JayZZee, appreciate the RiverCats game but DW is not into the national pastime. We are visiting Chicago as part of this trip, a friend and I wil be attending a Cubs game at Wrigley field. Never been to WF and am looking forward to a game at this historic ball park.

suzie nailed just about everything in walking distance of the train station. I'll list some places to avoid.

Hard Rock Cafe: Horribly overpriced mediocre food

Joe's Crab Shack: Bad food and drinks, screaming children, and singing waiters.

Johnny Rockets: Perhaps the worst hamburgers in Sacramento

I guess when you get down to it, River City Brewing is the only edible place in the Downtown Plaza, other than Morton's (very good but very expensive) and the Food Court (lol)
