Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forum.

Are you traveling through the region over the whole 3 weeks or are you staying in Sacramento for some reason, ie. business, and taking daytrips and weekend trips from here?

Are you renting a car?

In Sacramento itself you should check out Old Sac and the Railroad Museum. http://www.oldsacramento.com/

There is a ton of history here. The Gold Rush, Pony Express and Transcontinental Railroad all have roots in Old Sac. The Big Four (Crocker, Stanford, Huntington and Hopkins), Millionaires of San Francisco’s Nob Hill, all made their fortunes in Old Sac.

There is also:

State Capitol http://capitolmuseum.ca.gov/

Stanford Mansion www.stanfordmansion.org

Governor’s Mansion www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=498

Sutter’s Fort and the Indian Museum www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=486 www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=485

Crocker Art Gallery www.crockerartmuseum.org

The California Museum of History, Women and the Arts. http://www.californiamuseum.org/

The California Auto Museum

http://calautomuseum.org/

Aerospace Museum of California

http://aerospacemuseumofcalifornia.org/

Further afield, you can visit the Gold Discovery site in Coloma. www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=484

Yosemite Valley is about a 3 1/2 hour (direct route) drive southeast of Sac. There are some interesting Gold Rush towns along the way if you want to take your time and go the slower Hwy. 49. Yosemite should get a minimum of 2 nights in the valley.

San Francisco is definitely worth a few days. It is about a 1.5 to 2 hour drive southwest of Sac.

Lake Tahoe is about a two hour drive east of Sac and deserves at least an overnight. Ideally I would spend a couple days at Tahoe.

Napa Valley is a wine region north of SF and can be done in a daytrip from Sacramento.

Sutter Creek is a cute Gold Rush town about an hours drive S.E. from Sac.

What are your interests? Museums, Outdoors, History ???

We can give you much information about Sacramento.

But, Is there a particular reason you are in Sacramento for three weeks?

tripjunky gave excellent advise.

You might want to also visit Folsom - they have good outlet shopping there.

I don't know how adventurous you want to be but you can rent kayaks, standing paddle boards, learn to wind surf or jet ski at Lake Natoma at the Sac State Aquatic Center. Loads of fun:

You can also visit he nearby fish hatchery or as my kids called it growing up Fish factory:

You could rent bikes and ride along the American River Bike Path. It would be a pretty nice ride in Sept.

I'm staying at a friends house they have one in chico and one Sacramento so I'll probably be spending a bit of time in both that's the only reason i'm spending staying there, but i was thinking of a road trip???

I should have access to a car for the whole three weeks

I would like to see outdoors and some of the cultural/historic stuff , i'm 23 if that's makes it a any easier to suggest things,

just wanted to check what type of weather I should expect in september

But i'm really grateful for all the things you've all suggested so far i didn't expect so much lol

The average high temperature in Sacramento in September is about 89 degrees Fahrenheit. It cools off a lot in the evening and mornings will be cool And it will be sunny. However, it's been much less hot than usual so far this year. We've actually had much better weather than most of the eastern US over the past month.

There's tons of stuff to do outdoors around Sacramento that time of year as others have already mentioned.

Definitely visit Lassen Volcanic National Park while you're in Chico. It's absolutely gorgeous and does not get crowded. If you have the chance, go a bit further north to Burney Falls.

I've heard good things about Bidwell Park in Chico but haven't been there.

the lassen volcanic park looks cool, so i'll definitely make the trip to see that, and the burney falls looks really nice.

Thanks

This may not be what you had in mind - but I know this occurs every September:
