Birding Hotspots this Spring

We will be visiting California end Feb/Mid March. What would be the best time and location to see the spring migration birds? Since the Sacramento Valley is on the Pacific Flyway, can we expects lots of visitors and resident birds?

You have several choices:

American River- Effie Yeaw Nature Center and American River Preserve.


Cosumnes River- (personal favorite because of the Sandhill Cranes)-


The National Wildlife Refuge is located quite a distance from Sacramento (about 90 minutes), but reportedly has the best views of flyways and migrational movement:


And here is the general link for the local Audubon Society:


You can use the City/area of Sacramento as a base camp for the Cosumnes and American River Refuges. You may want to consider a closer base when going to the National Refuge, especially if you want to be there before sunrise.

Do a search on this forum for a thread titled "Sacramento to Coast". I'm on my phone so I can't post the link right now. The thread covers lots of bird watching places around Sacramento.
