Where to stay near San Juan Capistrano

Could anyone please suggest where to stay near Capistrano? We do not know the area at all and we will have a rental car. We are staying in San Diego for a few days in early March and then going to San Juan Capistrano. I gather that the actual town itself is very small with only a couple of hotels/motels. Is San Clemente better than Laguna? I am sure everywhere is lovely down there but for a Canadian suffering -12 and snow, we want sun/sea and a bit of class on a 3 star budget. Thanks.

In town there is a Best Western Capistrano. North on Hwy 5 there is an America's Best Value and the Rancho Capistrano. In mission Viejo there is a bed and breakfast, Mission B & B.

Otherwise, it looks like the coast, yes, around Laguna or San Clemente. I can't comment on which would be best, being a central Californian, but you might do some creative googling.

Good luck.

San Juan Capsitrano is definitely beautiful, quaint and small. My suggestion would be to stay in either San Clemente or Laguna Beach. Each location is equi-distant to SJC and you can just into SJC within 15 minutes from either coastal location.

San Clemente is a lot smaller and quaint. You can stay there, and walk along Main St. and have plenty of shops, restaurants and beach to occupy your time.

Laguna is a bit bigger, but still charming and very enjoyable. You'll have more options of places to stay in Laguna, and a lot more shops and restaurants. It'll be pricier than San Clemente, so it'll depend on what your budget can bear.

Either way, you can't go wrong. Both locations are beautiful and whichever one you choose, be sure to visit the other. It's well worth it.

In additon, to the suggestions of San Clemente or Laguna Beach, the other beach town which is very close(actually the closest/5min) to SJC is Dana Point.

If you see any listings in Dana Point/Capistrano Beach then that would be a good choice, also.

Have a look at www.expedia.com. There are number of accomodations which are directly on the coast highway in front of the beach in DP/CApo Beach.(Doubletree Suites, Casa Capistrano, etd. The more upscale resorts are the Marriott,RitzCarlton and the St. Regis, which are all located in Dana Point.)

Also, in San clemente, there is an oceanfront motel (The Beachcombermotel.com) which overlooks the pier and with an outstanding view of the coastline. Across from pier www.casatropicana.com B&B and in the center of town Allwaysinn B&B.

Enjoy!!
