Biking in San Jose can be great, but there is a lot that the city can do do improve bike access. We do have a fair number of bike lanes and there are some bike trails too.

Here is an interactive map from VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) that shows the good biking routes.

San Jose's mostly pretty flat, so that helps. You may want to use a combination of major transit lines--Caltrain, light rail, main bus lines--and biking to get to your final destination. It saves you riding time and also helps because bus routes can be kind of far apart in San Jose. All transit vehicles there can carry bicycles, though how it's done is different on Caltrain, light rail and buses.

The biggest issue for a cyclist there is that a lot of the roads are very wide--2 or 3 or occasionally more lanes in each direction. Intersections often have multiple turn lanes. A bike lane certainly helps but you're still affected by the traffic. But the number of cyclists there is growing, so people are doing it--just be ready for what's out there.

Thank you for your responses.

I very much like exploring cities by bicycle.

Can you recommend a place to buy a cheap bicycle ?

For cheap bikes, your best bet is probably Target or Walmart.

My favorite bike store is Hyland Bikes on Meridian though - they are a family run business and are great. Their prices are good, although they don't really sell cheap stuff there.

When are you coming? VTA, the transit agency for San Jose, intends to have a bike share (low cost bike rental) program up and running by October.

Here's the description of bike sharing from VTA. It's a new thing, there are large scale systems in Paris and in some Chinese cities, but so far only Washington D.C. is doing it on a large scale in the U.S. You'd be paying a fee, but the idea is to keep that fee small to encourage people to use the system:

"Bike share systems provide a network of iconic public bicycles from self-service bike share stations located around town. Similar to car-sharing, members can check out a bicycle, ride to their destination and return the bicycle to any bike share pod in the system. Bike share uses unique, commuter-style bicycles designed for urban use and employs high-tech features such as smart cards, solar powered stations, wireless internet, and GPS technologies. "

There is the exact same thing in Tel Aviv, and it is very convenient.

Is it already working in San Jose ?
