Very expensive options include a taxi for 50 miles or www.supershuttle.com which wont be very cheap either. There is Caltrain which is a train going from SJ to SF but you will have to take a free shuttle to Santa Clara station and then Caltrain www.caltrain.com

The most economical option imho is to rent a car from SJC and drop it off in SF.

It would be cheaper and faster to fly into SFO or OAK instead of SJC. Where are you flying from ?

We are flying in from Reno, so renting car might be the way to go.

Thanks

Unfortunately, public transportation between the south bay and the rest of the bay area is not that great - one of my major pet peeves about living here...

We live in San Jose and often fly out of SFO, and we use Supershuttle pretty often - they are a fine service. I did a quick search on the Supershuttle web site to see what pricing would be:

A shared van ride for 4 people will be $105 plus tip. These vans hold up to 9 people, so you would probably end up with other people to pick up and drop off.

An exclusive van is $125 plus tip - same van, just direct service.

A private towncar will be $130 plus tip.

Caltrain is an option if you don't have a lot of luggage. With luggage, it can be a pain. It takes awhile, but it is pretty cheap ($9/ticket - $36 for your group). There is a free shuttle from the airport to the Santa Clara station and then the ride up to SF takes about 90 minutes. There are some limited stop trains during the commute, but most trains that stop at the Santa Clara station make all the stops in between. Once you get to SF, get a taxi to your hotel - not far, so the fare shouldn't be much.

Rental car - parking is expensive in SF, so if you don't need a car for day trips while there, you could do a very short rental and return it in downtown SF. Rental car rates vary wildly, so you could get a nice deal, or it could end up costing you as much as the car service.

why don't you just drive from Reno to SF or Lake Tahoe to SF just over 4 or so hours -- it wil be shorter point to point instead of flying. Adding the time it takes from getting to the airport, going through formalities, flying and then getting a car and getting to SF it will take about 4 or more hours anyway

It will take you about the same time and if you are renting a car in SJC, why not rent one in Reno and drive and get rid of the car in SF

What is unstated is why you're flying to SJC vs. SFO or OAK, since it's so much easier to get to SF from either of these airports. If you decide to drive, you may find a company with a rental location near your hotel. Some downtown rental car locations have limited hours, especially on evenings and weekends.

Lots of Web sites, such as sftravel.com/parking/… with info on shuttles, etc.

We are flying from`Reno to San Jose' as it was so much cheaper for flights.

Also there was no direct flights to San Fran on the day we wanted to travel.

Hiring a car is quite reasonable, so will go with that option.

Thanks everyone

You might as well rent the car from Reno and skip the flying.

November_moon says: "Unfortunately, public transportation between the south bay and the rest of the bay area is not that great - one of my major pet peeves about living here... "

Please stop it with this ridiculous myth. It's less true than the flat earth theory.

For 45 miles distance in France or Germany, public transportation usually costs you three-four times as much and not be much faster. Caltrain charges about $24/$12 round-trip/one-way, an incredible bargain. bahn.de charges 26 euro for the non-express lander ticket. sncf would charge about 60/30 euro per person. In Switzerland, double the French price. If you're not in big cities, public transportation is basically useless.

For tourists within the touristed central area of a city like Paris, public transport is useless since everything is practically walkable. If you like being in the dark literally and figuratively, never mind that those stops are only about 1/4 a mile apart. London is more spread out and the Tube will cost you a lot more than Samtrans or Santa Clara VTA.

Think your 8 mile trip from Paris to Versailles was an especially convenient 30 minute train ride? That Mountain View to SJC distance which wouldn't cost you anywhere near as much or take as long on Caltrain.

Exceptions exist like taxi service in Beijing. But that's not public transportation.

Darth - Even though you asked nicely ;-) I will not stop because I don't believe it is a myth. I've travelled a few places myself and find our transportation to be difficult.

Neither our lightrail nor our Caltrain serve the SJ airport. This is madness. It should have, but political crap got in the way and it ended up bypassing the airport. Tickets are pretty cheap - I will give you that. But when the system was set up, they both missed the mark on a few key items that would make the systems much better.

Now the VTA is proposing to spend $175M to extend the lightrail to Los Gatos - yeah, because that will have a lot of riders. How about the proposed express route that would continue up Hwy 87 past Virginia to serve the airport and bypass the painfully slow trip through downtown? That idea gets no traction whatsoever even though it makes complete and total sense. How about completing the circle so that the line that goes out to Alum Rock continues around and hooks up with the existing line in south-east SJ? Or connect it directly back to downtown? No - instead let's spend a pile of money to send the lightrail out to a rich enclave without much demand for public transport.

If the high speed rail project actually happens, it will link up nicely with Caltrain and lightrail at the Diridon station. That will be very nice. If it happens.
