How to reach San Jose from San Fransisco by public transport

I need to reach San Jose convention center in the evening on the 18th of August from San Fransisco near Union square. What are my best options with public transport if I leave after 5.00 pm in the evening from SF?

You can take SF MUNI to the 4th and King station, then Caltrain down to San Jose Diridon station. From there, it is a short cab ride or a few stops on the VTA lightrail to the convention center. The time it will take depends on which Caltrain departure you take - limited stop and baby bullet trains skip a bunch of interim stops so it takes less time.

Thanks! Would it be cheaper to buy the tickets beforehand or does it not matter?

One way tickets are only valid for a few hours.

If you don't commute regularly, it is not practical to buy tickets more than a few hours beforehand. The only trick is to make sure that you have a ticket before you board, so you'll want to get to the station with enough minutes to find a ticket machine that works, etc. The machines take credit card. I believe that the SF station still has a human operator behind the window too. ~5pm is commuting hour and there will be many trains leaving one after the other. If your return from San Jose is later that evening, a round-trip ticket is convenient, but it may also be easier and the same price to get one-way tickets one at a time as the day progresses to maximize your flexibility.

There's no seat reservations. There's a lot of commuters, and you may be standing for a while on the train. If you get on a train early enough at SF, you'll find a seat with no problems.

The real question is how do you get back to SF? How late will you be at San Jose?
