Please recommend beach close to SLO

We will be in SLO in Mid-August and plan on spending a day at the beach. Which beach would you recommend and why.

Thank you.

Hi, Avila Beach is a nice choice, there is also Shell Beach which is very pretty, it is less populated than Pismo, another popular beach in this area. www.centralcoast.com Have fun! :)

Three beaches come to mind:

1. Avila Beach - A local favorite, and a personal favorite as well. Faces to the south rather than the west and has gentler water due to partial bay protection. Not too big, not too small. Always a fan of the swing sets despite my age.

2. Shell Beach - Rocky outcroppings and that sort of thing. Beach itself is small. Usually cooler than nearby Avila and Pismo.

3. Pismo Beach - A local and not-so-local favorite. Busier than Avila, but with a larger beach. Faces west rather than south and lacks bay protection. More dining and shopping options than Avila.

I vote for Avila too. During the summer, this part of California often has strong, chilly tradewinds from the northwest. Avila Beach is protected form these winds by the huge bulk of Point San Luis, a large landmass that forms the northern part of the bay. We've experienced warm, tranquil days in Avila when the other beaches in the area are chilly and breezy.

Just returned from a week to the SLO area and stayed at a charming Inn called the Avila Village Inn for four nights. Daily we enjoyed the tranquil waters of Avila (our favorite) in the area. Pismo appears to have seen better days (back in the Crosby clam back years) now with tattoo shops and worn down buildings. Cambria was a second favorite...try the tea room or robins there for lunch.

So I have another idea in a different direction and that's Morro Bay. It's about the same distance from SLO (takes about 15-20 minutes via Hwy 1) and you can exit at Morro Bay Blvd, then head to Beach Street from Main Street and go to the beach north of Morro Rock. It's a wide beach that's great for walking and you can go pretty far out into the water before you're at the waves breaking. People go out there to walk, surf and ride their horses...so really it depends on what you want to do at the beach. Morro Bay can be foggy or windy, so best to check the weather report first.

Glad you enjoyed the central coast, Avila and Cambria are both very nice areas to spend time in. :)
