Madonna Inn has been around for ages - and the rooms are themed. However, when I think of t hem, I do not immediately think a 30 year old would enjoy them. Is this a special night for you (i.e. birthday, anniversary, so forth)? If not, I would just drive a little further north and stay at the Best Western in Paso Robles. They have coupons for wine tasting; there are inexpensive places to eat nearby; and they give a discount for breakfast in the morning It is close to highway 101 and so fast to get on the way.
I like Moonstone Beach in Cambria - but most likely rates there are similar or higher than Madonna Inn unless you find a bargain.
I'm thinking that you should stop in and take a look at the Madonna Inn, and then drive on. I haven't been there in many years, so hopefully they have upgraded but it was getting kind of tired when we stayed there a long time ago.
I just looked at a few of the room pics on the link Puter provided and I swear I saw some shag carpeting!
Wow the prices are [choke] a tad steep, IMO.
Friends went last Nov. for their 40th Anniversary, where they stayed on their Honeymoon, on the way to San Francisco. They thought it would be a kick to go back. Turns out not much has been changed.
Better to go check out the mens restroom with other tourist, or go to the coffee shop.
If SLO is where you want to stop for the night, look at the La Cuesta Inn.
Eh, if you have the money and want a unique experience, it is worth it at least once, but now that we've been there, done that, if we have to stay in SLO we tend to stay at the Apple Farm or La Cuesta. On business trips I stay at the Embassy Suites.
It's a little bit out of the way, but we like to stay at the Lighthouse Suites in Avila Beach. We've stayed in many places in the SLO area, including the Madonna Inn, and this is our favorite. It's a tiny little beach town with one main street-very charming! The hotel is across the street from the beach with ocean views, and very nice. Not sure when you are going, but right now the prices are really good too. We're actually going for our anniversary in a couple of weeks.
Older and younger than you guys, but my wife and daughter think the Madonna Inn is a wonderful piece of folk art, and hope to stay there again. I'm not taken with it, it's just seems kind of silly to me. To me it's kitsch, but some people have a genuine affection for that kind of stuff.
We enjoyed the Seacrest in Pismo Beach. Lovely room and Great views, nice place to walk on the beach and take in the fresh air after a long car trip.
